The Aquatics Department is part of the award winning City of Lafayette Division of Parks, Recreation & Open Space. The Aquatics Department includes the aquatics operations at the Bob L. Burger Recreation Center, Waneka Lake, and Lamont Does Outdoor Pool. An expansion to Lamont Does is currently under construction, slated to open the summer of 2018. This project will transform the outdoor facility into the new Great Outdoors Waterpark.
As the Recreation Supervisor for Aquatics, you are responsible for all aquatic operations at the Bob L. Burger Recreation Center including facility, staff and program management. You will also be responsible for designing and managing the training program for all lifeguards and aquatics staff at all of our facilities. Ideal candidates will have demonstrated skills in the following areas:
-Staff Management: As the leader of the 100+ members of our aquatics team, which will grow with the expansion of the outdoor water park, the position requires at least three years of supervisory experience, and comfort and expertise with recruiting, hiring, and training, scheduling and managing a variety of positions at different locations. Ideal candidates will have demonstrated success with motivating staff to their highest potential.
-Program Management & Development candidates will prepare facility schedules, promote program attendance, and coordinate programs and events with other departments and community groups.
- Organization & Reporting: the position requires maintaining inventories of supplies, chemicals, and equipment, as well as a variety of regular reports to ensure procedural adherence and overall aquatic safety. Planning, organizing and delegating skills are crucial to this position to manage the day-to-day operations of our heavily-used facilities.
-Equipment Maintenance: CPO or equivalent certification is required, or ability to obtain, as well as a minimum of 3 years of operating both an indoor and outdoor aquatics facility; water park and lake experience preferred. Ability to operate, trouble shoot and make minor repairs to all aquatics equipment. Remaining current in industry standards and trends, as well as staying up-to-date on continuing education is required.
-Fiscal: Manage the aquatics budget of $500,000.00, ensuring fiscally responsible operations, including long-term financial plans and forecasting capital projects. Involvement in $5.5 million construction of the outdoor water park, and responsible for establishing opening operations including admissions, concessions, etc.

Management uses outcome-based performance indicators and does not micro-manage. This is a small team that offers large services to our community and has fun while doing it.
KNOWLEDGE: CPR/AED and First Aid; knowledge of departmental rules concerning the area in which assigned; and of lifeguard philosophies, policies and procedures; teaching methods and techniques. Knowledge of mechanics of pool operations, as well as aquatics planning, programming and implementing aquatic programs, point of sale operations and concessions management.
SKILL: Provide excellent customer service, handle customers concerns or problems in a friendly or professional manner. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Demonstrated skill in operation of equipment necessary to perform the functions of the job.
ABILITY: Prevent accidents; remain calm in emergency situations; work with little or no supervision; analyze and correct facility safety hazards; learn and adhere to the facility emergency procedures; establish and maintain effective working relationships. Plan, organize, instruct and supervise the assigned programs, facilities and staff. Demonstrated ability to appropriately adapt to changes in the workplace including scheduling flexibility, unforeseen mechanical difficulties, emergency situations, interruptions from patrons, and employees. Ability to demonstrate all lifeguard skills and maintain an extensive knowledge of aquatics operations, swim lesson programs, water fitness programs and aquatic programs.
EVIDENCE OF QUALIFICATIONS:
TRAINING: Bachelor’s Degree required, Certified Lifeguard, Certified Pool Operator or Aquatic Facility Operator, Lifeguard Instructor certification and Swim Lesson Instructor preferred or the ability to obtain within 90 days
EXPERIENCE: Minimum 3 year’s aquatic experience including operating aquatics filtration systems, including experience at a seasonal facility preferred. Previous swim instruction experience and management of multiple facilities preferred, or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides evidence that the applicant possesses the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position.
First Aid; CPR with AED, required; the preferred certifications stated above that the candidate does not currently have must be attained within six months of hire.
