Description of Position: Performs landscape maintenance and construction activities. Plants and maintains turf, flowers, seeds, bulbs, shrubs, and trees. Trims, buds, prunes and stakes trees, shrubs and plants. Cultivates, rakes, spaces and waters flowers and plants. Prepares soil for special needs using prescribed methods and materials. Applies appropriate pesticides as needed. Designs landscape plans including estimating materials, labor and equipment needed. Mows lawns, rakes grass and leaves, trims and straightens up garden beds, removes and disposes of dead plants, and winterizes trees. Repairs and adjusts landscape irrigation equipment. Performs snow removal. Operates landscape machinery including mowers, snow plows and brushes, weed whips, backpack blowers, edgers, chainsaws, and skid steer loaders.
Leads, directs and trains a landscape crew composed primarily of student employees on performing general gardening duties, care of soils, safe equipment operating procedures, work planning, site direction, and team building.
Work is performed outdoors. This position will be exposed to extreme weather conditions and extended hours during the winter months for snow removal.
Minimum Qualifications: AA degree in horticulture, landscape gardening or closely related field and one year of experience in commercial gardening, grounds maintenance and or greenhouse work or HS diploma and 3 years experience. A valid driver's license is required. A pesticide applicator’s license will be required 30 days after date of hire.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Ability to lead and direct a team. Ability to operate landscape equipment and machinery safely. Ability to plan and prioritize landscape work. Knowledge of horticulture practices. Strong interpersonal communication skills. Ability to effectively solve problems and resolve conflict
