Responsible for the technical implementation, maintenance and support of the campus-wide Ethernet and Wi-Fi network and for the establishment of high quality internet connectivity for the college community. Works with Information Technology staff and the campus community to develop and implement policies and procedures for the operations and use of campus-wide network systems, and helps to troubleshoot those systems. Prepares reports on resource utilization and develops plans for the enhancement, upgrade and replacement of those resources.
This position works closely with Library and Information Technology (LIT) colleagues, and the campus community to ensure efficient and organized management and support of day-to-day operations, well-planned and executed strategic projects, and valuable input to visioning and strategic planning processes. The Senior Network Engineer reports to the Director of Systems and Emerging Technology and is part of the Systems and Network Technology team.
Develops, troubleshoots, configures and maintains the core data network of the college running over fiber-optic, copper and wireless technologies.
Responsible for configuring and maintaining all network equipment on campus, including managed switches, core routers, wireless access points and their controllers, and various other specialty network devices, such as environmental sensors and other network-attached equipment.
Oversee installation, daily operation, and maintenance of network equipment and cabling plant.
Ensure the overall functionality, efficiency, and reliability of network infrastructure including responding appropriately to service anomalies, including outside of normal work hours when necessary.
Maintain, improve, and expand the quality and coverage of wireless networking and telephony across campus.
Maintain consistent, accurate, and appropriately comprehensive documentation.
Ensure proper access to network and telephone equipment, while also maintaining and enforcing appropriate controls.
The engineer should coordinate, train and utilize other Information Technology staff as necessary and recruit and train student personnel.
Ensure smooth operation of disaster recovery (DR) and business continuity capabilities. Help design DR tests and lead and participate in DR testing.
Share oversight responsibility for operational uptime of mission critical systems and other software with colleagues across LIT.
Assume other duties as assigned.
Must be comfortable managing and troubleshooting all aspects of Ethernet network environments.
Must have an understanding of best practices with regards to structured cabling and Wi-Fi deployment.
Must be able to monitor and provide high quality internet connectivity using BGP with multiple ISP’s and respond to and investigate abuse reports.
Ability to stay informed of emerging trends relating to hardware, software, protocols, and management tools.
Maintain, respect and protect the confidentiality of information and a secure operating environment.
An understanding of Business Continuity procedures and techniques.
A strong commitment and ability to documenting systems is required
Bachelor's degree in computer science, technology, business administration, or a related field.
Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in telephony, networking, or data center administration, including planning, design, construction, implementation, and support wired networks, wireless networks, or firewall infrastructure.
Extensive knowledge of networking VLANs, Spanning Tree, BGP and other routing protocols, VRRP, VPN, DNS management, DHCP management and firewall rules.
Organization, planning, project management, leadership, cost estimation/management and supervision skills.
Ability to successfully organize and lead large complex technical projects and project teams.
Ability to guide, lead, and develop technical employees.
Direct experience with one or more of the following vendor’s equipment is preferred:
Extreme/Brocade switch hardware
Netsight network management
Palo Alto firewalls
Infoblox DNS/DHCP network appliance
Must be able to lift and carry up to 30-pounds
Must be able to climb and work from ladders
Must be able to work in dusty and dirty locations
