Klapper Art Center Evening Studio Technician - Hourly Position Reports To: Chair Art and Art History and Full Time Technician Provides technical support for the Adelphi University Art Department specifically the 3-Dimensional studio the Printmaking studio and the Painting studios located in the Klapper Fine Arts Facility. The Evening Technician oversees art students and assists faculty during supervised evening lab hours ( 5-9pm) with the safe production of their artwork maintains the facility with lab-specific custodial duties and reports to the full-time day technician. RESPONSIBILITIES and DUTIES: The Evening Technician will work closely with the full-time technician and faculty to maintain a safe work environment in a professional fine-arts facility that houses a wide variety of industrial process and techniques utilized toward the goal of visual art production and coursework. The Evening Technician will work in conjunction with and report to the full-time Klapper Art Center Technician with an expanded laboratory-specific custodial role. Printmaking Painting and the 3-D studios each require unique custodial maintenance setup and preparation. Skilled supervision and oversight of the entire Klapper facility is required. Expanded Job Description Includes: Provides specialized studio/laboratory technical services to faculty and students of visual arts. Maintains 3-D Printmaking and Painting studios in orderly operable condition and ensures overall security and safety. Assists with the 3-D studio directly assisting faculty and students during off-time hours and offering ongoing assistance to same students during scheduled open-studio hours. Ensures operational and safety procedures are in place and followed as outlined by the University and state requirements. Gives direction assistance and work guidance to faculty student workers and monitors as necessary. Designs fabricates constructs and adapts equipment and materials to meet specific needs of studios. Operates and maintains equipment and systems. Troubleshoots equipment problems and performs standard repairs and assists with the implementation of studio procedures and policies. REQUIREMENTS: Must be a self-starter with ability to work independently and also to collaborate with faculty and other staff to solve problems. Extensive understanding of health and safety concerns specific to studio fabrication processes. The technician must have a basic understanding of all related sculptural object-making procedures including but not limited to: woodworking hot and cold metal fabrication gas and electric ceramic kiln operation foundry work mold-making and carving in tandem with enthusiastic improvisational skills to help expedite non-traditional art-making methods. Supplemental training for the Printmaking and Painting areas will be provided; no prior understanding of these (2-D) techniques is necessary for this position. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The 3-D Studio Technician is a hands-on shop-technician activity in an industrial space. The physical lifting and manipulation of materials and objects of will be an ongoing need; objects may often weight 50 pounds or more. Loading and unloading ceramic kilns mixing plaster and cement constructing with full sheets of plywood and fabricating in steel are essential and ongoing physical requirements of the job. HOURS: Monday - Friday 5pm - 9pm Fall and Spring Semesters
