Facilities Services is comprised of seven separate units which include: the AVC Office, Business and Information Services, Campus Facilities Services, Custodial Services, Grounds/Recycling, Engineering/Utilities and Support Services. Physical Plant’s mission is to continuously improve facility services for the campus community in partnership with clients and staff. The Roofer position engages in projects requiring the management of facility needs for campus buildings. This position requires general knowledge of all building systems.
•Experience and ability to work independently on projects: preventative, planned, corrective maintenance and installation of a wide variety of roofing systems including, but not limited to, the following: clay, coal, tar, asphalt built up, APP and SBS modified bitumen, EPDM, and other roofing. Diagnoses of roof problems due to age or abnormal wear; perform appropriate measures to extend roof life and normal cleanup of the roof areas. Diagnose and repair roof leaks, including both first stage emergency and permanent repair procedures. Inspect roofs on a regular basis; report on roofing materials, roof conditions, roof access, abnormal wear patterns, flashing, skylights, valleys, gutters, and toe boards. Knowledge of Single-Ply Systems such as PVC,and TPO. •Adherence to the scheduling of work through the work management program is required. Consult shop superintendent and/or lead for technical information. Support maintenance projects and programmatic work assignments. Keep accurate work records and complete paperwork in a neat and timely manner. Define and describe materials, tools and/or equipment, work methods and task sequences. Serve as liaison with clients, relaying their needs and requirements to the appropriate department or superintendent. Obtain materials and equipment as required. •Adhere to all University and departmental safety guidelines. Attend job-related and safety training as required. •Perform other duties as assigned.•Must have completed a four year roofer apprenticeship program or equivalent. •Employee must possess three years journeyman experience in a comparable position or related experience in a university, hospital or large building complex. •Education and training can be through documented experience and/or professional development through an accredited college or university. •Must be able to work in confined spaces. •Must be able to safely move supplies and objects up to 75 pounds with or without a reasonable accommodation. •Employee must possess a valid California driver’s license. •Employee must be available to respond to emergencies, work on-call, rotating swing shift, watch and holidays as required by management. •Adhere to Facilities Services—Campus Services’ work rules and Code of Conduct. •Employee is personally responsible for following health and safety guidelines/instructions. •Perform infrared roof scans to determine the presence of water beneath roof. •Ability to use a variety of craft techniques and all tools pertaining to the trade. •Knowledge and ability to correctly dispose of scrap, debris, materials and waste. •Ability to gain access to work areas and maneuver around obstacles that require ladders, toe boards and scaffolding as well as the ability to safely maneuver supplies and objects up to 75 lbs. with or without a reasonable accommodation. •Must possess excellent communication skills and ability to interact in a positive manner with campus community, including students, building managers, academic personnel, and craft personnel, in a multi-cultural environment. •Ability to track jobs to completion and prioritize requirements; able to work and support shutdowns and project schedules to minimize interference with others. •Must be able to read information from equipment manufacturers’ manuals, service requests, layout sketches, blueprints, appropriate state and local government codes, trade-specific manuals and practices, and to determine how the fixture or equipment should perform. •Knowledge of relevant building codes and regulations. •Ability to communicate clearly over the telephone and two-way radio. •Ability to execute all job assignments in a timely manner. This position is governed by the terms and conditions in the agreement for the Skilled Crafts Unit (KB) between the University of California and the Alameda County Building and Construction Trades Council (ACBCTC).
