Agency Overview: The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is responsible for building, maintaining and operating the state’s roads, bridges, tunnels and ferries. The position: VDOT is seeking a highly qualified, senior level executive with proven experience in managing the full scope of a large scale transportation construction, maintenance and engineering focused program. You will have a key role in building partnerships with various levels of government, elected officials, non-profit and private sector groups, the media and employees to better serve the public in meeting current and future transportation needs. This position is based in Suffolk with oversight for VDOT’s Hampton Roads District which consists of 12 cities, nine counties, two islands and more than nine thousand lane miles, from Greensville in the west to James City in the north to Accomack in the northeast and Virginia Beach in the southeast. The district provides operational oversight for water tunnels, special facilities, and moveable bridges including: I-64 Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (HRBT); I-664 Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel (MMMBT); Elizabeth River Tunnels – I-264 Downtown Tunnel and Route 58 Midtown Tunnel; Jamestown Scotland Ferry; Route 17 James River Bridge; I-64 Willoughby Bay Bridge; I-64 High Rise Bridge; I-264 Berkley Bridge; and Route 17 Coleman Bridge. Approximately 900 employees work within the Hampton Roads District which provides maintenance services through the Accomac, Franklin, and Williamsburg Residencies and oversight of contracted maintenance services through the Interstate Management Office. Construction services are provided for the district through the Urban, Peninsula, and Rural Area Construction offices.
