Provide skilled maintenance of exterior campus landscape to include lawns, gardens, flower beds, hedges, walkways, plazas, streets and all associated components such as trees, shrubs, irrigation systems, fences, walls, curbs, etc. The skill in the application of herbicides and insecticides and the ability to identify, plant, transplant, fertilize, irrigate, cultivate and prune trees, shrubs, and plants is critical for success in this position.
Duties, functions and responsibilities include: mow lawns, string trim, weed, rake leaves, hand-pick loose trash, repair fences, gates, walls and walks; clean out drainage ditches and culverts. Cultivate and maintain a variety of botanical specimens on campus from lawns and formal garden areas, which includes transplanting, preparation of soil, planting, watering, fertilizing, pruning and pest control. Maintain an inventory of bulbs, annual and perennial flowers and ornamental flowers. In addition, Landscape Services employees provide direct support for Event Management operations and campus moves which include function set up and break down, trash and recycling, function support, furniture and equipment moves.
Assist with snow removal operations. Duties, functions and responsibilities include: hand shoveling stairs and walkways, spreading ice melt products, operating equipment such as a skid steer track machine, backhoe, forklift, etc.
Assist with developing and monitoring a chemical spraying schedule. Mix fertilizer according to instructions and calibrate sprayers to apply fertilizers as directed; calculate appropriate application rates; spray lawns, shrubs, and trees with fertilizer, herbicides, and insecticides.
The following qualifications are required and must be demonstrated by presenting certificate (s) and or license (s) or candidate must be able to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and abilities through an in-field evaluation and assessment.
* Massachusetts driver's license;
* Massachusetts State Hoisting License
* Massachusetts Pesticide Applicators License
* 5-week landscape management/horticulture certificate program or equivalent
* 3-5 years landscape maintenance experience including the application of herbicides
* Must be able to lift 100 pounds and/or carry 50 lbs.
* Bachelors or Associates in horticulture, plant science, turf management, landscape construction or equivalent preferred.
