Primary responsibility, with direct assistance where needed from the manager, is to underwrite contract bonds adhering to Markel Surety’s underwriting philosophy, appropriately assessing the risk presented and properly managing that risk. The Associate Underwriter/Underwriting Trainee is to have the knowledge and apply the skills required of this position, including knowledge of required and normal ratios, risks associated with various types of construction activities, competition’s underwriting attitudes and industry norms for all issues. The Associate Underwriter / Underwriting Trainee is the source for knowledge and information concerning bonding.
Be familiar with Markel Surety Underwriting Guide and all subsequent updates
Review all new submissions / bond requests and initiate response
Make reference calls and document file
Communicate with agent regarding file needs
Enter financial information into system, analyze, review system analysis
Evaluate risk and determine underwriting criteria – collateral, funds disbursement service, other
Determine the necessary forms for a case (bond forms, riders, statutory, etc.)
Determine rate and other significant issues affecting bond issuance
Review contract documents, identify onerous clauses and address each
Fully document underwriting files
Responsible for content of each bond and credit file
Communicate clear, complete instructions to Underwriting Assistant for bond issuance & invoicing
Have knowledge of all duties of underwriting assistants
Assist with maintaining agency relationships to produce profitable new business.
Develop knowledge of agency personnel and any company/agent relationships
Be involved in local activities and associations on a regular basis
Assist with collections when necessary, especially at quarter and year end
Bachelor’s Degree required
Contract surety experience desired
Ability to: 1) read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations; 2) write information and respond to questions from manager, clients and agents; 3) professionally draft business correspondence; 4) calculate premium rates, commissions, and percentages; 5) define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; 6) thoroughly analyze financial data and make both objective and subjective recommendations to manager based on that data; and 7) handle assigned volume of accounts; ability to prioritize, organize, and handle delegated assignments.
