Job Summary/Basic Function: The renovated Lamar University (LU) Setzer Student Center will be the social heart of campus for students. In this signature building, so full of light and activity, students will interact with each other and with faculty, staff, and visitors, creating a vibrant and thriving focal point for campus life at LU.
The Lamar University is seeking a Director of Setzer Student Center to help us with this very exciting renovated building to our campus. The new Director will create the facility's purpose and intent to support programs, events, meetings, and conferences of the student body and policies and procedures, as well as be involved in the supporting Student Involvement and Programming, Civic Engagement, and Student Organization opportunities for students.
Summary: Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Student Engagement and Dean of Students, the Lamar University Director of Setzer Student Center oversees the total operation of the Center including Scheduling, Operations, Event Planning, Student Involvement and Programming, Civic Engagement and Student Organization Offices, responsible for the direction and determination of goals, objectives, and the means to achieve these goals by management of services, planning of budgets, and serving on various committees. Also including responsibilities for publications, reports, and working with students, alumni (ae), and the public on event planning/special events. This position serves as the primary communication link between the Center and other campus departments and the community. This position will also represent the university as a member of the Association of College Unions International.
The Director will directly supervise three full-time, professional staff members (Associate Director for Student Involvement and Programming, Assistant Director for Operations & Event Services, and an Administrative Associate Senior) and indirectly supervise two professional staff members (Coordinator for Student Involvement and Coordinator for Operations) and 50+ student employees.
? Demonstrates an understanding and knowledge of the role the college student union has on a university campus. Directs the day-to-day operation and maintenance of the Setzer Student Center.
? Maintains annual budget and applies fiscal and budgetary planning techniques within financial constraints. Monitors and submits all purchasing decisions using online purchasing system and processing check requests and budget transfer requests. Is responsible in managing the revenue from space reservations.
? Coordinates and schedules space allocation for the Setzer Student Center and selected outdoor spaces including vendor/s approval.
? Works closely with all center entities in building an inclusive campus community through social, cultural, educational programs and activities.
? Supervises, hires, trains, and evaluates professional staff and student employees.
? Work in partnership with University Facilities Management in custodial, preventive maintenance, repairs and renovations for the Setzer Student Center and in support with the Bookstore and Dining Services operations and services.
? Provides direction and administrative support to student led organizations, Cardinal Activities Board programming, student leadership development for organizations and professional training and development to student employees.
? Establish operating policies and procedures consistent with University policies and regulation including state and federal law and Texas State University System rules.
? Implement proactive and comprehensive short-term and long-term initiatives that are designed to strengthen Setzer Student Center programs, activities and events.
? Act as the main contact with vendors, in terms of negotiation and commitments working collaboratively with the University Contract Administrator and Associate Vice President for Student Engagement, in the execution of the contractual agreements.
? Develop and implement a comprehensive marketing program to increase the engagement and participation of students in the programs, activities and events of the Setzer Student Center.
? Serves on Student Engagement and University-wide committees and represent the University on community committees and boards as required.
? Maintains and creates relationships with external entities including vendors/operations.
? Performs other duties and additional responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications: Minimum Qualifications: Masters degree in Education, College Student Personnel, Higher Education Leadership, or a related field. Eight years of related experience. Five years of supervisory experience in a student center/union, a similar work environment, or a related field. Adept at being a leader and a hands-on contributor. Experience in managing budgets and strategically planning fiscal matters. Experience in recruiting, hiring, training, and managing employees. Experience with new construction and renovation projects preferred. A combination of education, experience, and training that would produce the required knowledge and abilities could be considered.
Other Specifications: Proficient preferred in software and programs: i.e., Orgsync, Collegiate Link, Socialtables, Ad Astra/Live25, Banner, MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and similar programs. Knowledge of and ability to comply with Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), Title IX, institutional and TSUS system rules and policies, and State of Texas rules and regulations. Understanding of student development and the role of student affairs in the educational process. Ability to build relationships across campus with students, administrators and other campus community members. Proven ability to gather and utilize assessment data. Demonstrated oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Provides daily contact with other campus departments, faculty, administrative staff, parents, students, alumni, and the general public. This position may be designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA).
Preferred Qualifications: Preferred Qualifications: Doctoral Degree in Higher Education, College Student Personnel preferred. Minimum qualifications include ten years of progressive experience working in college student center/union. A minimum of five years in upper level administrative position in a comparable student affairs unit which includes five years of experience in the operation of a student center/union in a higher education institution. A demonstrated ability to lead and direct a medium size complex organization which provides programs and services that are essential to the student, staff, faculty and community; an understanding of how the student union functions as a part of Student Affairs and the University at large; and a demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse constituent groups.
