Towson University is accepting applications for a Landscape Technician in Facilities Management. This position, under general supervision, performs technical work in the field of landscape maintenance, ornamental horticulture, and/or landscape construction. Performs landscaping activities such as planning and layout of projects, planting and cultivating shrubs, trees, turf and flowers, and pesticide applications. Performs daily, seasonal and annual tasks to support landscape operations including tree maintenance, landscape maintenance/installation, pesticide application, equipment operation and some moderate to heavy manual labor. Properly and safely operates equipment such as; pesticide sprayers, water trucks, landscape tools, skid steers, backhoe, loader, trucks, trailers, as needed. May lead small team work and work independently. Assists in various landscapes renovation and installation projects. Reads and understands safety data sheets, landscape designs, maps, and equipment repair manuals. Provides basic equipment maintenance including but not limited to; sharpening chainsaws and greasing equipment. May include some hardscape repair such as pavers, brick or stone walls, and bollards.
The Landscape Technician performs landscaping activities such as maintaining, planning and layout of projects, planting and cultivating shrubs, trees, turf and flowers and pesticide applications. Performs daily, seasonal and annual maintenance. Inspects and monitors the conditions of the landscape to assess horticultural or environmental problems. Performs insect and disease identification, soil evaluation, and other evaluative techniques. Determines and takes appropriate remedial action. Advises and instructs grounds personnel in erosion control, mowing practices, fertilization, pruning, irrigation and applications of pesticides to fields and landscape. Ensures adequate supplies, materials and equipment are available for assigned projects. Prepares reports and cost estimates. Ensures the operational safety and readiness of equipment; cleans equipment and performs routine maintenance and repairs. Maintains a safe work area, cleans up work sites upon completion of job, picks up all tools and equipment; maintains tools and equipment in safe and operable conditions. Safely uses and mixes chemicals according to direction labels. Operates landscaping equipment such as aerifiers, sprayers, forklifts, backhoes, power and hand tools. Cleans project area upon completion of work. Performs snow removal. May perform additional duties including assist other shops as requested or required particularly in emergency situations.
This position is an Essential Personnel position for emergencies such as snow removal, special events, storm damage, power outages and other emergencies that occur within Facilities Management. Schedule must be flexible in order to meet departmental needs.
An Associates degree in horticulture, arboriculture, forestry or a related field and four years of experience in landscape construction, agronomy or landscape maintenance work OR a Bachelor’s degree in, horticulture, arboriculture, forestry and two years of related experience (High School and six years or experience could also be accepted). Candidate must possess working knowledge of landscape construction and methods and techniques for planting seeding and caring for lawns, gardens, shrubs and trees; thorough knowledge of and skill in the operations and proper care of assigned hand and power tools and equipment; and the ability to organize and coordinate grounds maintenance work and provide guidance and instruction to grounds personnel. Strong communication and computer skills required as well as the ability to work at heights up to 35 feet, perform heaving lifting, and work in adverse weather conditions. Applicants must possess and maintain a valid Maryland Noncommercial Class C or equivalent driver’s license with no more than 5 points.
The ability to be licensed by the State of Maryland as a Maryland pesticide applicator within 6 months of hire preferred. MDE Responsible Personnel Training (green card), successful completion of Maryland Roadside Tree Care Expert or certification from approved associations also preferred.
Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
A Criminal Background Investigation and DOT pre-employment physical are required for the hired candidate and the results may impact employment.
Salary and Benefits
