Responsible for leadership and oversight of implementation related to MSU’s Reasonable Accommodation/Disability Policy to ensure compliance with civil rights laws and university policy. Oversee the University’s response to disability-related grievances to assure that complaints related to disability discrimination are handled in a prompt, thorough, and equitable manner.
Lead the development, implementation, and review of University policies, procedures, and grievance processes as they relate to the ADA and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
Lead development, implementation, and administration of the University’s Web Accessibility Policy in collaboration with IT Services.
Serves as the institutional leader for all ADA/Section 504-related matters within the University, including communications with governance bodies, university committees, responding to internal and external inquiries.
Leads efforts to proactively assess institutional compliance with the ADA, the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and the Michigan Persons with Disabilities Civil Rights Act and works with the AVP for Civil Rights and Title IX Education and Compliance to develop and implement plans in response to accessibility assessments.
Collaborate with the AVP for Civil Rights and Title IX Education and Compliance, Director of OIE, Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities, Vice President for Student Affairs and Services, Provost’s Office, Office of General Counsel, and Human Resources to identify and address any patterns or systemic problems.
Collaborate with the Director of OIE, Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities, Vice President for Student Affairs and Services, Provost’s Office, IT Services, and Human Resources and other campus partners to assure a comprehensive and effective training, education, and outreach programs across campus.
Provide training and information on the provision of equal opportunity for persons with disabilities.
Maintain proficiency with the Americans with Disabilities Act, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and Michigan’s Persons with Disabilities Civil Rights Act and new legal developments and evaluate the impact on university policies and procedures.
Consult with units and individuals regarding accommodation and access concerns.
Consult with OIE Director and OIE staff regarding disability discrimination allegations and accommodation appeals. Assist in providing training to OIE staff relating to issues pertaining to the review and analysis of disability discrimination complaints
Serves on the barrier free access committee and works collaboratively with the Office of Planning and Budgets, Resource Center for Persons with Disability, Infrastructure Planning and Facilities, and Residential and Hospitality Services regarding facility access issues and provides consultation relating to construction and renovation projects.
Serves on the Behavior Threat Assessment Team to provide input and advice to ensure decisions are non-discriminatory and reflect consideration of potential reasonable accommodations. Assists in providing training to other committee members in collaboration with the BTAT Case Manager.
Serves on the Medical Withdrawal Committee providing input to ensure decisions and processes are non-discriminatory, follow proscribed procedures, and are consistent across the university. Provide input to improve the effectiveness of medical withdrawal processes and assist in providing training to leaders on campus relating to the medical withdrawal process
Serves as an ex officio member on the President’s Advisory Council for Disability Issues.
Master’s degree or JD and minimum of five years of experience at an institution of higher education or an equally complex organization. 3-5 years of experience working in compliance with ADA/Section 504 regulatory environments in higher education; in-depth experience with ADA/Section 504. Demonstrated knowledge and ability to interpret the ADA, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and Michigan’s Persons with Disabilities Civil Rights Act. Experience conducting or overseeing the ADA reasonable accommodation and grievance processes. Demonstrated ability to collaborate with multiple stakeholders and partners. Demonstrated ability to successfully lead others and effectively prioritize multiple projects. Adherence to deadlines and excellent written and verbal skills. High integrity and ethical standards. Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to remain neutral. Ability to build consensus, collaborate, and work with broad number of, and diverse campus partners. Previous experience in an ADA Coordinator or Deputy ADA Coordinator role in an institution of higher education.
