The primary purpose of this position is to serve as an industrial hygienist who administers the University's Asbestos Hazard Management program and safety inspections for Facility and Energy Services areas. The Industrial Hygienist will have the knowledge to ensure University policies as well as local, state, and federal regulations and guidelines pertaining safe handling of Asbestos Containing Materials (ACM) and Lead Containing Materials (LCM) on campus. The position conducts site inspections to identify potential exposure to hazardous or toxic materials, ensure the safe handling of those materials, and recommend control measures to mitigate employee exposure during maintenance of existing conditions, renovation and new construction projects. This position communicates investigation findings with the EHS Executive Director. Additionally, this position is an Emergency Response (ER) member and a member of the Hazards Management Program (HMP) team.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in a physical science, biological science, environmental science/engineering, occupational safety, industrial technology or related discipline; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Some positions may require specific certifications or licenses.
Specific jobs will require additional minimum training and/or licensing upon selection.
North Carolina licensing in various asbestos and lead disciplines (Inspector, Air Monitor) is required.
Professional knowledge: Understand and administer University, local, State, and Federal guidelines as pertaining to asbestos and lead handling.
Program Monitoring and Administration: Conduct and document moderately complex inspections/investigations and assist in corrective actions.
Training and Education: Design and develop training programs pertaining to proper lead and asbestos handling.
Safety and Health Compliance: Oversee compliance with EHS measures and guidelines, in addition to local, State, and Federal regulations.
Communication: Interpret inspection results and recommendations effectively to higher level administrators to implement inspection recommendations.
Certified Industrial Hygienist designation is preferred, but not required. Current HAZWOPER certification preferred.
