About this Role:
The Bindery Machine Operator II is part of the Printing Department at Vanderbilt University and is a key individual contributor responsible for printing needs for the organization. This position sets up, operates, adjusts and maintains bindery machinery; assists in planning and coordinating workload of bindery department. Reporting directly to the Production Manager the Bindery Machine Operator II provides services for the entire Vanderbilt University campus.
About the Department:
Vanderbilt Printing Services is committed to the University and Medical Center community. The department employs 29 full time staff members who process over 6,000 orders annually, averaging more than 20 million impressions. Campus Copy is the 'quick print' arm of Printing Services. Equipped with a fleet of high-end production digital copiers and printers, Campus Copy can turn around even the most difficult projects quickly.
In 2012, Vanderbilt University Printing Services earned Forest Stewardship Council certification. Established in 1993 as a response to concerns over global deforestation, FSC is an independent, non-governmental, not-for-profit organization established to promote the responsible management of the world's forests. FSC certification provides a credible link between responsible production and consumption of forest products, enabling consumers and businesses to make purchasing decisions that benefit people as well as provide ongoing business value. We feel that FSC certification is the gold standard of programs designed to promote total transparency in the use of sustainable materials and their processing within the printing industry, and VUPS is proud to offer the FSC logo on selected publications. Key Functions and Expected Performance:
Plans and prioritize work for bindery staff
Establish standards and procedures
Provide recommendations to maintain production schedules and meet deadlines
Set up, operate, make adjustments and maintain bindery machinery
Sets up, operates, and maintains mailroom equipment
Feed cover, signature and printed sheets into various machines for stitching, folding, scoring, perforating, and gluing operations
Examine stitched or bound books and magazines to ensure that pagers or signatures are bound numerical or folio order according to sample copy
Receive and issue inventor items and supplies for press room and bindery
Assist area leadership to reconcile and request replenishment consumable products for the area
Prepare all materials for shipping and/or delivery to mailroom
Communicates with other Printing Services staff, clients, and supplier/vender contacts
Perform preventative maintenance as required by equipment manufacturer
This position does not have supervisory responsibility; this position reports administratively and functionally to the Production Manager.
Experience and Education:
High school diploma or GED is necessary.
4 years of experience is necessary
Valid TN Driver's License
Mobility – Ability to assist in the movement of objects
Dexterity – Ability to manipulate objects
Visual – Ability to recognize, register, and response
Communication – Ability to understand, respond and translate into action
Normal office environment
Proximity to moving mechanical parts
