A member of the Information Technology Services (ITS) Network Services Team, the incumbent will share the responsibility for the implementation and maintenance of enterprise and departmental Linux server environments and workstations, enterprise application servers, and enterprise network services. Operating collaboratively in a team environment, the Network Specialist will work closely with members of the Network Services team, other ITS teams, and across campus.
While Linux will be the incumbent’s primary platform responsibility (working alongside the Linux System Administrator) they will also provide secondary support for Network Services personnel and team-supported technologies, including VMware ESX, SAN, VDI, and network management.
Qualifications: (1) An Associate’s degree (A. A.) or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school and at least five years’ experience in related field; or (2) significant, demonstrated, and appropriate technical experience required.
Demonstrated experience with Microsoft collaborative messaging technologies including Office 365 (email) administration, Active Directory, Active Directory Federated Services, Microsoft server operating systems, Linux operating systems, VMware virtual data center technologies, and VMware desktop virtualization technologies.
Applicants seeking a more senior role will have a Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university (or significant, demonstrated, and appropriate technical experience), have seven or more years of relevant experience, and demonstrated operational expertise in the design, implementation, and support of collaborative messaging technologies in the enterprise; performing maintenance procedures for Windows and Linux operating systems; writing test and integration plans; documenting issues and resolutions for future reference; performing system analysis and design in a high availability environment; installing enterprise level virtual systems; and monitoring, maintaining, and repairing all virtual IT Systems.
The Network Services Team
Network Services provides the college with a solid and reliable infrastructure and consulting expertise, primarily to the technical areas and units of campus. Alongside responsibilities for the wired and wireless network infrastructure and data transmission needs of the campus, this group provides expert support and management of virtualized computing, cloud computing resources, network security, the SAN, enterprise authentication, enterprise backup, the campus’s Linux network, and our high-performance computing cluster. The expansion of this team represents the institution’s understanding of the importance of these services to the growth of technology at Grinnell College, as well as the importance of expanding our capabilities into emerging technology areas, a key component of the team director’s strategic view forward.
Information Technology Services
Information Technology Services oversees the majority of technology, audio-visual, and telephone services for Grinnell College, and provides service and strategic support through its functional teams: Enterprise Systems; Information Security; Network Services; User Services; and Core ITS Services. ITS has an annual operating budget (excluding salaries and asset rotation) of approximately $4 million and a professional staff of about 40. Under new leadership (the Chief Information Officer was appointed in 2015), and with the full support of the visionary president, Dr. Raynard S. Kington, ITS is undergoing a strategic advancement and benefiting from increased investment by the college. The college’s senior leadership team have recognized the benefits of a stronger technology presence on campus and worked hard to create and promote a collaborative culture at Grinnell College.
