The part-time Business Assistant will assist the Externally Funded Programs Manager with the day to day business operations essential to carrying out purchasing, payroll, and other financial transactions associated with sponsored projects and other externally funded accounts in the School of Public Affairs. This position will serve as the primary contact for SPA faculty and staff for general budget administration and other various resource management issues to ensure that the needs of the School and University community are met.
Conducting regular review of sponsored projects and other externally funded accounts to ensure that financial transactions are completed successfully and accurately, using the various tools available through American University (Colleague, Business Intelligence, etc.).
Running, creating, and reviewing budget reports.
Reviewing and ensuring financial transactions are in compliance with University and sponsor policies, procedures, and best practices, while proactively addressing and resolving protentional issues.
Responsible for tracking journal entries, cost transfers, course releases, and summer salary transactions associated with sponsored projects.
Establishing, developing, and maintaining constructive and cooperative working relationships with faculty and/or staff both within SPA and across AU.
Supports the SPA Budget Team as needed

$20.00 - $25.00/hr
Required Education and Experience
Associate’s degree in Business Administration or other related field
At least 3 years of budget or combined budget and administrative experience
Strong analytical skills and attention to detail
Ability to recognize potential problems and address them proactively
Preferred Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration or other related field
Prior experience working in a higher education setting
Prior experience working in grant administration
