The Department of Facilities Services is responsible for the efficient and cost effective operations, maintenance and management of all Tufts university grounds and facilities consisting of approximately 5 million square feet of space on three campuses (Somerville/Medford, Grafton, and Boston).
A broad range of services are provided to support the University campuses including: facility maintenance by all trades, capital maintenance, custodial services, energy and utilities systems, recycling and waste management, Conferences and event services, residential facilities coordination and grounds and landscape maintenance.
Related functions, which require close coordination with this department, are public and environmental safety and security, campus planning and design, construction of capital and deferred maintenance projects including major repairs, renovation and new construction.
Tree/Shrub Management/Maintenance Surveys college tree population for evidence of pests, fungi, and disease. Recommends and implements appropriate I.P.M. methods and techniques, which may include the physical removal of pests or the application of pesticides. Treats diseased areas. Collects samples of areas with unknown diseases or pests and submits for analysis; upon receipt of reports, recommends and applies appropriate treatment. Recommends tree removal as appropriate. Apply a systems approach for applying and practicing modern arboriculture methods and techniques. Identifies structural problems affecting specific trees. Prunes trees for structural safety, health, and physical appearance. Uses proper pruning tools and techniques including handsaws, loppers, chainsaws, etc. Uses ropes, saddles, and other related equipment to climb and prune trees safely. Maintains American Elm tree population according to specific needs, e.g. prevention and treatment of Dutch Elm disease. Performs periodic review of Elm Care and Maintenance Program to ensure its effectiveness. Personally executes activities related to the program, or provides hands-on direction for others, including the scheduling of required follow-up work. Ensures that all legal requirements and safety standards are being met. Develops and implements College-wide tree fertilization program. Designates trees requiring fertilization. Measures trees; determines fertilizers to be used; calculates amount of fertilizer needed for each tree; applies fertilizer in granular or liquid form; sets up pumps, hoses, flow controls, etc. for liquid fertilizers. Investigates new and/or different fertilizers as necessary. Cultivates trees as necessary, Directs permanent and temporary help as necessary to accomplish these tasks.
Equipment Use/Maintenance Operates, maintains, and, when necessary, directs the use of all related tools, equipment, and vehicles employed in the tree management program, including, as necessary, hydraulic sprayers for fertilization and irrigation. Collaborates with Grounds Supervisor in the selection of contractors to perform such work as tree removal under problematic circumstances and major tree planting projects. Prepares work sites for contractor arrival. Instructs contractors on work specifications and oversees work performance.
Landscape Design May design and draw small landscape projects in conjunction with Facilities Services and/or consultants. This function may include CAD/CAM drawings or detailed landscape layouts. May work with landscapers to determine appropriate varieties of trees/shrubs for specific locations. May work in collaboration with other areas of the grounds crew, Facilities Planning, outside contractors, or special requests from senior leadership.
Reporting/Recordkeeping As requested by Facilities Service, provide various reports regarding the condition of trees across campus and nearby areas. In collaboration with Grounds Supervisor, provides recommendations for improvement. Maintains data in tree database and provides requested reports from the database. Keeps records of pesticide/chemical applications as required by federal/state regulations and Tufts University policy.
Related duties Remove snow and ice from walks, stairs, patios, drives, lots, walks, etc. Perform grounds work that may include and not limited to; mowing and trimming lawns, mulching and edging beds, weeding, planting and removal of plants and shrubs. Perform set-ups and breakdowns for events Move furniture and supplies as requested Performs other related grounds and labor duties and responsibilities as assigned.
High school diploma or GED required. A minimum of 7 years of experience as a climbing arborist.
A certified ISA and/or MCA arborist in good standing with a minimum of 3 consecutive years as a certified ISA or MCA.
Working knowledge and experience with installing tree cable and bracing systems and a systems approach for modern arboriculture.
Valid MA State of Massachusetts Commercial Applicator's license (Core) License.
Valid MA driver's license and a 2A Hoisting license. A CDL driver's license is preferred.
A college degree in arboriculture, urban forestry, turf management or related horticulture field is strongly preferred.
Experience training others and establishing daily and long-term work plans and assignments.
Special Work Schedule Requirements: Be able to work in adverse (cold, rainy, hot and windy) weather conditions, work from heights in excess of 50+ Ft., climb trees, use a climbing harness and saddle and manual and power tools while in trees and in bucket truck. Work from a bucket truck up to 50+ Ft. Willing and able to respond appropriately and in a timely fashion during off shift and off work schedule hours for urgent/emergency services. Lift and carry objects up to 50 Lbs. 7:30-4:00
