The Chief Marketing and Communications Officer (CMO) will play a critical leadership role in MSUM. The CMO will oversee major initiatives to bolster the university's reputation, garner regional and national visibility, and generate revenue. Reporting to the Vice President for University Advancement, and working closely with the President, the CMO will serve as the university's chief marketing and branding officer, responsible for the strategic direction of MSUM's marketing, branding and communications efforts. The CMO will be a highly creative, forward-thinking leader with proven experience leading complex organizations. This candidate will be a bold, persuasive communicator with well-established credibility and integrity, and will possess strong leadership and management skills, excellent judgment and diplomacy, as well as the capacity to work collegially and collaboratively
Develop and implement a strategic, integrated marketing program in support of University strategic plans and priorities.
Set short- and long-term goals with regard to policy, strategy, and raising the visibility of the University.
Create a collaborative model for extending the marketing reach of the University internally and externally.
Coordinate with University administrators, faculty and marketing team to conceptualize, manage and implement innovative marketing projects that actively engage key audiences (alumni, students, parents, prospective students, community, others).
Lead the Marketing team in developing creative approaches in various mediums – print, electronic, social, audio, video, etc.
Manage a small team of professionals by establishing and modeling performance expectations and standards, and fostering a positive, innovative culture.
Provide a customer service-oriented department in support of University department priorities, within the context of a fast-paced environment.
Train University audiences in best practices, especially as related to social media.
Construct and maintain a University media communication plan – including a crisis component, and acts as the University spokesperson.
Demonstrate ability to handle confidential information and high intensity situations.
Work closely with colleagues in the MN State system and at the system office to support the brand of Minnesota State University Moorhead
Exhibit a high level of verbal and written communications expertise.
Manages contracts and vendor relations.
Successful and progressive experience planning and implementing integrated marketing and communications strategies, preferably in a large, complex organization.
Expertise building visibility and positive perceptions through various media strategies
Evidence of building partnerships with business and community leaders/ organizations
Familiarity with established and emerging uses of technology, including website design and optimization, digital engagement, and social media
Expertise developing compelling messages for targeted audiences
Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, including journalism, copywriting, speech writing, editing, and publishing/e-publishing
Ability to lead, manage and motivate teams
A passion and demonstrated commitment to diversity and experience developing messages for diverse audiences
Executive management experience in a decentralized organization
Experience leading and sustaining change through communication
Demonstrated success in engaging internal and external communities
An understanding of the value and unique mission of MSUM
