Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
Facilities Planning and Management (FP&M) at Iowa State University is seeking candidates for a Landscape Architect. This position will be filled as either a Landscape Designer II or a Landscape Architect III level. This position serves under the direction and supervision of the Manager for Design Services within the Facilities Design & Construction unit of Facilities Planning and Management.
This position is responsible for providing professional landscape architectural design and project management services in support of the physical planning and design activities of Iowa State University. This position prepares and coordinates the design development of in-house and contracted services projects, including the planning, design, and construction of landscape designs and site development plans for the ISU campus. Provides project management services such as client communication, project scope development, schedule management, cost estimates and budget management. Reviews work by design consultants and work with FP&M departments in the planning and development of university physical facilities. Coordinates, supervises, and provides on-site observation of construction and implementation of campus landscape projects. Coordinates and maintains the quality of ISU landscape practices.
This position is expected to handle tasks with minor supervision, with autonomy and ingenuity. The ability to document projects and communicate design detail to peers, clients and construction trade personnel is vital. Knowledge of detailing, sequence of construction, plant species characteristics, installation needs and budgeting is required.
In addition to the responsibilities listed above, the position coordinates their work with other design staff and part-time student employees for assigned projects. Assists in developing, updating, documenting and enforcing university design standards. Assists in developing, updating, and supporting FP&M strategic planning initiatives and the University's mission.
In addition to the duties above, the Landscape Architect III will handle projects with minimal supervision, more autonomy and a greater degree of ingenuity. Also responsible for stamping drawings for code review submission as required.
The successful candidate must have the ability to communicate and work effectively with university clients, professional consultants and contractors. Must have tact and good negotiation skills to maintain positive client and workplace relations. Must have strong organizational and analytical skills, including the ability to organize and coordinate work within projects.
Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree and 2 years of related experience.
Preferred Education and Experience:
-Bachelor of Landscape Architecture or Bachelor’s degree and Master of Landscape Architecture. -Commercial or institutional landscape experience in the design and specification of landscape and hardscape projects. -Experience working with staff, faculty and students on higher education and/or governmental projects. -Experience using computer aided drafting software such as AutoCAD or Revit. -Experience using illustrative and imaging computer programs. -Demonstrated knowledge of Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping software application. -A demonstrated working knowledge of plant materials, their uses and the nursery industry that supplies plant materials in Zones 4-5. -Professional experience including project management, design and site development planning, specification writing, development of planting plans and grading plans. -Experience estimating landscape and exterior hardscape construction and maintenance costs.
