Assist engineers, designers and cognizant individuals in the design and fabrication of various components for experimental devices. Applies theoretical knowledge in machining and metallurgy. To machine critical parts used in the laboratory's experimental program. Assists junior technician in the development of skills and knowledge. Perform preventive maintenance and repair machinery as needed.
Design and manufacture custom jigs, tooling and fixtures as required
Interface with other stakeholders to process authorized work orders in a timely manner
Participate in regular meetings and provide feedback on progress of work orders as appropriate
Time management and effective job execution and ideal utilization of the resources
Ensure routine maintenance of equipment in the shop; assist in supply of needed tools and specialty consumables
Enforce a clean and orderly work area; improve work station cleanliness and ergonomics
Provide feedback for process improvement, design of own workstations and shop area
Perform measurements and inspection of machined parts
Communicate effectively in a cross functional team environment
Participate in feedback on design, concept development, peer reviews, and propose viable options
Adopt Engineering Department's procedures and ensure full compliance during execution of duties
Time management to ensure timely completion of assigned duties
Consider safety as a priority for own and others and participate in active promotion of a safe work environment
Able to collaborate in multi-disciplined team and interface with others in a constructive manner
A minimum of 8 years of machine shop experience, 10 - 15 years of experience preferred
Thorough knowledge of machining operations including lathes, milling machines, surface grinders, large vertical and horizontal milling machines
2 & 3 axis CNC machines for automated and manual operations
Ability to translate engineering drawings into machine program by direct download or design
Ability to develop program, troubleshoot, and optimize machining program
Ability to operate precision measuring instruments
Ability to perform high precision machining to tight tolerances (0.0005”) and knowledge of geometrical tolerances and drafting symbols
Working knowledge of properties of specialty materials such as Inconel, Copper, and non-metals such as phenolic, ceramics and FRP; as regards to machinability, tooling, and suitable operational parameters.
Excellent math skills commensurate with geometric calculations and other necessary calculations and conversions
General knowledge of rigging and hoisting in the machine shop and necessary safety precautions in use of rotating tools, parts, and prevention of the associated hazards
Knowledge of shop procedures and job travelers
Ability to maintaing a track record in good attendance, avoidance of conflict and willingness to accept criticism and make effort for own improvement
