Towson University is accepting applications for a Steamfitter in the Facilities Management Department. Under general supervision, this position performs skilled work in assembling, installing, repairing and maintaining high and low pressure steam hot water systems and general plumbing duties when required.
The Steamfitter installs, repairs, and maintains heat radiation units, gas and oil fired steam boilers and piping; regulating and controlling devices, valves, steam traps, pressure reducers, coils, pumps, power plant piping systems, and pneumatic control systems. Ensures installation and repair of systems and equipment adhere to code requirements and specifications. Cuts, bends, threads, welds, or brazes iron, steel, copper or plastic pipe; tests for leaks and packs expansion joints, valves and pumps; repairs and maintain centrifugal and positive displacement pumps, performs routine and emergency maintenance, as shift requires; assists other mechanics and provides guidance and training in steamfitting work to maintenance personnel.
Four years of progressively responsible experience in the steamfitting trade. Candidate must have comprehensive knowledge of and skill in applying the theory, thermodynamic principles, methods, and techniques used in the steamfitting trade, and general knowledge of and skill in a variety of semi-skilled building construction or maintenance and repair practices and techniques used in the trade areas. Candidate must also have skill in inspecting and making adjustments, repairs and replacements to building fixtures and mechanical equipment, and ability to apply quality and safety standards. Must be able to lift weight up to 70 pounds; work in, on, around, over and under fixed equipment or machinery; work in hazardous or irritating environments, adverse weather or temperature conditions, tight or confining spaces, and heights up to 35 feet; manipulate heavy equipment and tools in the performance of duties; and wear and work in personal protective equipment. Candidate must possess a valid MD driver’s license or equivalent with no more than 5 points.
Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
A Criminal Background Investigation and pre-employment physical/drug screen are required for the hired candidate and the results may impact employment.
Salary and Benefits
