The Department of Art and Art History at Santa Clara University, a Jesuit, Catholic university offering undergraduate degrees in studio art and art history, seeks applicants for a full time adjunct lecturer position in Art History for 9/1/2017-6/19/2018. The course load for this appointment is six or seven courses over three academic quarters (e.g. 2/2/2 or 2/3/2 course distribution).
The successful candidate will be expected to teach a minimum of four courses for our innovative Cultures and Ideas two-course sequence and two or three additional courses that satisfy University Core requirements, at least one of which will be in their special field of interest. The Cultures and Ideas I-II course sequences must approach the history of visual culture from a global perspective (including both Western and non-Western components) and span a chronological sequence of at least 200 years. The successful candidate may choose to use a pre-approved syllabus for the Cultures and Ideas I-II sequence, or develop their own sequence so long as they include Western and non-Western components. The tentative schedule for this position requires teaching between the hours of 8:00 am and 4:00 pm on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Due to the scheduling requirements for Cultures and Ideas sections (which must be taught on the same days at the same times for two quarters in a row), there is very little flexibility in the teaching schedule once finalized by the department chair and the College of Arts and Sciences Dean's office.
$45,780 $56,700 depending on number of assigned courses and prior teaching experience; benefits eligible.
Required: 1) PhD in Art History (or advanced ABD) and demonstrated excellence in teaching art history survey courses at the college or university level. 2) Minimum of one year of experience teaching at the university level (beyond teaching assistant) and evidence of strong teaching evaluations. 3) Demonstrated expertise in the specific topics proposed for the Cultures and Ideas course sequence. 4) Willingness to fulfill other departmental duties as assigned by the Chair.
Qualifications: We seek a candidate with a proven success record in the classroom and a strong interdisciplinary approach to teaching. PhD (or advanced ABD) required. Doctorate or advanced ABD in any field of art history; ability to teach Contemporary Art desired but not required.
Faculty responsibilities include (1) teaching and (2) service, as specified by the Santa Clara University Faculty Handbook (sec. 126.96.36.199). Duties include but are not limited to:
Teaching (95%) 1. Planning and teaching six or seven courses: four courses for the Cultures and Ideas I-II course sequence, and two or three additional courses as assigned by the Department Chair. Courses that satisfy University Core requirements must be taught from a syllabus approved by the appropriate college Core committee. Teaching a course typically includes developing syllabi, assignments, readings, and course schedule before the course begins; developing appropriate teaching preparations for each class meeting; selecting course materials and ordering books; conducting and appearing on-time for all scheduled class meetings; submitting course grades by quarterly deadlines; and administering all required course evaluations (numerical and narratives). 2. Use appropriate measures of student performance, provide timely feedback to students, and assign grades that are an accurate and fair evaluation of student work; 4. Post and maintain 2-3 weekly office hours on campus; 5. Demonstrate a command of the discipline and skill in presenting it effectively; 6. Administer narrative course evaluations to each class as assigned by the chair. 7. Serve as an advisor to assigned students providing informed advice; 8. Develop courses for which they are responsible and contribute to general curriculum development. 9. Conduct all assigned class meetings and exams. Final exams/critiques must be held during exam week (week 11); 10. Assign and submit student grades to the Registrar by the designated deadline each quarter. Final grades for Spring quarter 2018 are due June 19, 2018. 11. Fulfill other instructional or academic duties as may be assigned by the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences or the Chair of the Department.
Service (5%) 1.
