Department Description: Theatre Discipline: The UMM Theatre program encompasses theatre as an artistic form and as a social and cultural institution. The study of theatre arts fosters a creative imagination, an inquiring mind, a sense of social responsibility, professional discipline, a collaborative attitude, artistic standards and judgment, and a respect for the art form. The Discipline usually produces three shows a year: one in fall semester, one in early spring semester, and a children's show done late in spring semester. Meiningens, UMM's student theatre organization, also produce one, sometimes two shows a year. Auditions are limited to UMM students, with Theatre majors generally accounting for about one-third of the casts in our productions.
Office of Student Activities Conferences and Events: The Office of Student Activities, Conferences and Events coordinates and implements a comprehensive cultural, educational, recreational and social co-curricular program that contributes to the college's primary mission of undergraduate liberal arts education. The office fosters an environment that provides student leadership and citizenship opportunities, celebrates diversity, and supports and enriches student life. The Student Center provides a gathering place that enhances community life, supports cultural and social activities, compliments UMM’s academic experience, and hosts programs and events that serve the campus, community, and region. Conferences and Events coordinates customized attention and a “one-stop shop” for comprehensive event planning services for UMM and community groups in venues across the campus. Purpose of the position: The Theatre and Event Technical Manager oversees the Student Center Event Crew, manages the Theatre scene shop and works with a variety of technical services, including performance quality sound, stage lighting, and video projection for events held on the campus, as well as technical support during event planning and management. Events range from full scale professional performing arts events to comedians, lectures, films, student-planned talent shows and UMM Theatre Discipline performances.
Responsibilities – Overall (100%): • Support the development and implementation of a comprehensive campus events program that extends UMM’s liberal arts mission beyond the classroom. • Collaborate with Theatre faculty, Student Activities, Events and Conferences staff and other individuals, offices, committees and programs within and outside the university to develop and implement a plan for campus events that: o Creates and maintains a high standard of event presentation, providing a signature UMM experience for audience members, performers, and event planners. o Provides intentional student education and development, o Partners with campus offices and programs to provide seamless services and experiences – for students, faculty, staff, off-campus event planners, and campus guests, o Builds community and fosters a healthy campus environment, o Supports the recruitment and retention of a talented student body, and o Advances the mission and vision of the college. • Recruit and retain a diverse staff team and foster an inclusive and respectful working environment.
Responsibilities – Theatre Discipline (50%): • Supervise and train student staff and laboratory students in the construction and maintenance of the theatrical scenery and lighting for University Theatre productions. • Support the Theatre faculty and supervise student work-study staff to organize and maintain the supplies and inventory of scenery construction materials, tools, and storage spaces. • Work with and report to UMM Theatre faculty supervisor to insure that the scene shop serves as a strong teaching forum for students. • Depending on the individual hired there may also be occasional design opportunities.
Responsibilities – Student Center (50%): • Hire, train, and supervise a student event crew (10-15 individuals). Develop work schedules for crew that meet programming demands and comply with Financial Aid employee guidelines. Hold regular meetings with tech crew. • Collaborate and work effectively with students, faculty, staff and community members from diverse backgrounds and programs. • Review tech requirements for all events and develop plans for meeting those requirements. Negotiate technical needs with professional touring artists/companies as needed. • Develop and maintain Student Center sound and lighting equipment inventory. Develop a plan for purchasing needed equipment and supplies. • Coordinate the development of written information on: o Edson Auditorium sound & lighting capabilities and how to’s o Oyate Hall sound & lighting capabilities and how to’s o Technical equipment inventory • Act as Chief Operator of KUMM Student Radio, assuring accurate records are kept to maintain compliance with FCC regulations.
Appointment Details: This is a full-time, nine-month, L term appointment in the Actor Technician job classification (4936), represented by the ASFCME Technical Union. The position is directly responsible to the Theatre Discipline Coordinator and the Director of Student Activities, Conferences and Events.

This position will report to the Theatre Discipline Coordinator and the Director of Student Activities, Conferences and Events. The qualifications for this position are as follows:
Essential knowledge, skills and abilities: • Some college training in theater or experience as a performer or technician. • Experience with sound and lighting equipment as well as theatre scene construction shop tools and equipment is required.
Preferred knowledge, skills and abilities: • Bachelors degree in theatre or technical theatre. • A demonstrated commitment to building a diverse, inclusive work environment. • Experience training and managing a crew of technicians. • Knowledge of Vectorworks/AutoCAD and SFX/Qlab sound software.
