The Production Manager for the Wirtz Center is responsible for organizing and supervising the production process and elements, including budgets, personnel, calendars and space, and managing all communications necessary to efficiently coordinate and lead the production process for all events produced and presented at the Center. The Production Manager oversees the production process through the close and direct supervision of all production personnel across all aspects of production, rehearsal and performance, and by acting as the primary conduit for communication and coordination among all production personnel, including directors, designers, music directors, choreographers, production area heads, shop staffs, faculty, students, the Department Chairs of Theatre and Performance Studies and the Center's Managing Director.
Please note: The Production Manager is required to work a lot of long and late hours over multiple days in a row during technical rehearsals for approximately 10 productions that the Wirtz Center produces or presents annually.
Create and manage the annual production calendar for the Wirtz Center including space management of all production venues, as well as individual rehearsal, technical and performance calendars for each production.
Work closely with each production's director, designers and Center staff to successfully implement production concepts and designs through budgeting, construction, technical rehearsals and each production's performance run.
Coordinate the communication and interaction between the director, designers, production department heads and stage management team for each production. Schedule and lead all production meetings.
Oversee the quality and safety of all production elements designed, created and built/executed for each production. Insure that theatres and shops maintain safe working conditions and practices in line with industry standards.
Production manage all main stage productions for the Departments of Theatre and Performance Studies, WAA-MU, the Center's summer season, dance programs, and any additional performances or productions produced or presented by the Center.
Supervise and manage other staff members either on staff or independently contracted to production manage non-main stage productions and events in the Struble and Wallis Theatres as well as any scheduled in the Barber and Louis Theatres.
Coordinate technical rehearsals, technical information, schedules, production resources and production staff duties.
Supervise the Center's professional shops and production staff, as well as graduate assistants assigned to shop duties or as production run crew heads, and over hire or temporary personnel hired for construction and production. Hire and contract guest production artists when needed to supplement production staff and students.
Administer and manage allocated production budgets for the main stage season, WAA-MU and the Center's summer season, and report monthly budget status reports to the Managing Director. Develop and manage the Center's annual Capital Fund budget for all production and theatre facility needs.
Develop and enforce all Center production policies and procedures based on the department of Theatre's and Performance Studies' educational vision and goals.

An undergraduate degree in Theatre, or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience from which comparable skills can be acquired.
3 years’ experience as a production manager or as an assistant production manager.
Knowledge of scenery construction, paint and props.
Knowledge of lighting technology.
Knowledge of sound technology.
Knowledge of costume construction and wardrobe.
Knowledge of projections technology.
Experience managing performing arts spaces and facilities and working with outside facility and production technology vendors.

Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Strong staff management and interpersonal skills, as well as leadership and diplomatic skills.
Excellent organizational skills, ability to work under pressure on many projects and with people of varying levels of experience and expertise.
Knowledge of the theatre art form and the local and national theatre industry.
Ability to communicate with and work in close collaboration with theatre artists including directors, designers, playwrights and music directors.
Ease with managing a large staff and multiple production spaces.
Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Excel, or a similar spreadsheet program.
Ability to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner and to gather and analyze information and multiple viewpoints. Ability to work well in group problem-solving situations.
Preferred Qualifications: (Education and experience)
5 or more years’ experience in a similar position.
Experience working with a similar size professional theatre staff.
An advanced degree in technical theatre or production management.
Experience working in an academic environment.
Advance knowledge of scenery, lighting, sound, costume and projections technology.
Experience working with the newest theatre technology -- especially in lighting and sound.
