The Deputy Building Official is responsible for the technical, administrative, and supervisory work for the Development Services department and acts as the Building Official in their absence. This position provides oversight and assistance to the Building Inspectors and performs specialized and technical oversight of all plan reviews for complex construction projects.
Provides daily supervision of over 30 staff members including Plan Examiners, Inspectors, and Customer Service representatives.
Oversees, interprets, and supervises building inspectors regarding inspection practices, training, and International Code Council (ICC) interpretations.
Provides technical oversight to all Plan Examiners. Must have the knowledge and ability to interpret and evaluate complex construction plans and be able to translate plans across a wide range of audiences.
Assist Building Official with implementing City policies and procedures including, but not limited to, technical construction code amendments and adoptions, Flood Plain management, fee structures, and the execution of department business plan and strategic initiatives.
Act as Inspection Operation liaison to Land Development, Project Management, Zoning, GIS, and Business Operations and attend meetings and make decisions on behalf of Building Inspections.
Stand in as staff liaison to Homebuilder’s Association (HBA), Association of General Contractors (AGC), Associated Builders and Contractors IABC), Air-Conditioning Contractors of America, Plumbing Mechanical Advisory Board, Electrical Advisory Board, and Building Advisory Board.
Must have the experience and temperament to effectively diffuse staff and customer conflicts to seek amicable resolutions.
Must be able to make difficult decisions with little or no supervision or time considerations.
May be asked to perform other duties as assigned.
Requires a Bachelor’s Degree
Minimum of seven (7) years of related experience
A combination of education and pertinent experience may be considered
State of Texas Licensed Plumbing Inspector required within one (1) year of hire
ICC Combination Commercial Inspector and/or ICC Combination Residential Inspector required within one (1) year hire.
A valid driver's license is required. Successful out of state candidates must be able to obtain a valid Texas driver's license within 90 days of hire
