Amherst College invites applications for the full time, year round, Locksmith position, job group and level PT-1. Collaborates with Amherst College Police Department to provide appropriate physical security for the campus facilities. Supports the college's efforts to maintain a safe and secure environment for all campus residents and employees.
Engages in collaborative work with the Facilities Building Trades Supervisor, the Carpenter/Assistant Locksmith, and the Information Technology Systems Administrator/Integrator (Access Control Office).
The position is designated as providing essential services and may be required to report to work, or remain on duty even when the College is closed. In addition, must respond to emergency calls and be available for call ins on nights and weekends, potentially frequently.

Installs, maintains and repairs locks and associated hardware, maintains and administers the master key system throughout the campus facilities, installs and maintains the hardware portion of the electronic access system.
Maintain and repair overhead and in floor closers and other related hardware.
Oversee the installation of power door openers and conduct maintenance.
Dismantle all types of locks such as padlocks, door locks, safe locks and repair or replace worn tumblers, springs and other parts. Cut, issue, and maintain records of keys issued to community members.
Provides assistance during renovation of existing or construction of new facilities by determining the requirements for locking devices and systems from blueprints, schematics, or sketches, making recommendations for such systems based upon knowledge of available products, and installing or monitoring the installation of locking devices or systems on renovated or newly constructed facilities.
Maintain card access hardware, prepare entryways for card access hardware, oversee installations of systems by contractors, troubleshoot electronic hardware, and repair low voltage problems.
Maintain and repair campus key systems.
Maintain accurate records of the key system, enter data into key records and keep accurate records of all changes of keys issued and locks changed.
Provide additional keys for commencement and reunion events, and perform lock changes when necessary.
Distribute and collect keys for summer programs and provide support for capital projects.
High school diploma or equivalent
Valid driver's license and successful credentialing in order to operate college vehicle
Professional Locksmith Certification
3 years of experience as locksmith
Basic background in low voltage wiring and electronic access equipment
Proficient in Microsoft Office and the ability to learn new software programs including Key Management software
Strong time management, organizational, problem solving and project management skills.
Attention to detail.
Demonstrated verbal and written communication, and interpersonal skills
Commitment to, experience with, and ability to work effectively with a broad spectrum of individuals from a variety of diverse backgrounds.
An acceptable criminal offender records information check (CORI)
Successful completion of a pre-employment physical/lift test
More than 3 years of experience as locksmith
Strong background in low voltage wiring and electronic access equipment/installation
Similar role at an academic institution or large facility
