Promotional priority for Teamsters runs from 3/26/2019 through 4/2/2019
This position is responsible for performing landscape maintenance and construction activities for FM Landcare on the Twin Cities Campus.
Plant and maintain annuals, perennials, seeds, bulbs, shrubs, trees, and turf. Trim, prune, and stake trees, shrubs, and plants. Prepare planting beds and soil; cultivate, rake, mulch, space, and water plants. Apply appropriate pesticides as needed. Mow, aerate, and fertilize turf. Trim and straighten up garden beds; remove and dispose of dead plants and organic material. Repair and adjust landscape irrigation equipment. Perform snow removal using plows, brushes, blowers, shovels, and sanding equipment. Operate landscape equipment and machinery including mowers, weed whips, hedge trimmers, edgers, chainsaws, skid steer loaders, and trucks.
Lead, direct, and train a landscape crew composed primarily of student employees on performing general gardening duties, safe equipment operating procedures, work planning, site direction, and team-building.
Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Job is full-time, and work is performed outdoors.
This position will be exposed to extreme weather conditions and extended hours during the winter months for snow removal.
Job is year-round, 100% time Teamster Unit 3 position.
The position is covered by the Teamsters Union – Union/Fair share deductions may be made.
This position includes the option to participate in the U of M benefits package.
Probationary period: 720 straight time hours.
Salary Range: $39,665 - $48,568
AA degree in horticulture, landscape gardening or closely related field and one year of experience in commercial gardening and/or grounds maintenance or HS diploma and 3 years experience.
A valid driver's license is required.
A pesticide applicator’s license will be required 30 days after date of hire.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
Knowledge of horticultural practices and experience operating landscape equipment safely.
Ability to twist, bend, stoop, climb ladders, lift up to 50 pounds regularly, reach at and above shoulder height, squat, and kneel.
Ability to use a computer and portable tablet device.
Ability to interact and communicate with fellow employees, management, customers, and the general public in a courteous, cooperative, and professional manner.
Maintain a positive attitude, demeanor, and public image when performing services for customers and the general public at the University.
Experience working in a decentralized work environment.
Ability to work in a team environment, lead part-time student employees, and prioritize landscape work.
Strong communication, customer service, and problem-solving skills.
