Under the general supervision of the Chief Horticulturist, the Assistant Horticulturist performs a variety of horticultural and arboricultural tasks; i.e., plant propagation, tree pruning, greenhouse operation, installation and maintenance of plant material and application of chemicals and fertilizers; performs other grounds and building maintenance. Independent judgment is exercised in determining work methods after receiving written or oral instructions. Exercises limited supervision over a small seasonal work crew performing manual tasks. Aids in the oversight and maintenance of all greenhouse, conservatory, and landscaped areas throughout the Rock Island Park and Recreation Department and designated municipal landscapes.
Examples of Duties: Propagate plants using seed, division or cuttings; prepare and maintain flower beds.
Assist in pruning, shaping or removing all types of woody plants using chain saws and other forestry hand tools.
Mix and apply chemicals to control growth or pests.
Maintain growing or display houses by regulating temperatures, watering systems and ventilating systems.
Perform semi-skilled building maintenance.
Plow snow with truck and blade attachment and assist in ice pond maintenance.
Assist in other grounds and building maintenance work as required.
Manicures grass turf with a wide variety of equipment.
Develop small planting areas by measuring, staking, laying out and selecting material.
Make routine repairs to equipment.
Complete records and reports as required.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of a two (2) year associates degree oriented toward horticulture, buildings and grounds maintenance, along with experience in the field.
Should have hands on experience with annual, perennial, herbaceous and woody plant materials and understanding of their characteristics, propagation and cultivation. Experience with these materials in a landscape setting, as well as, in confinements.
Should be able to operate equipment normally used in a landscape construction setting such as dump trucks, end loader, backhoe, roto-tiller, sod cutter, trencher, etc. Additionally, hands on experience exercising these skills in a work environment shall be required. A strong background combing training and experience may be considered in lieu of the above.
Specific knowledge of the principles and techniques of greenhouse and outdoor garden management; knowledge of laws governing application of chemicals; knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions required for all phases of work.
Skill in the use and maintenance of chain saws, forestry tools, mowers, string trimmers, hand tools and other landscaping equipment. Skill in transplanting and propagating all types of flowers and plants.
Ability to maintain records; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, officials and the general public.
