The Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) and the Northeast Regional Alliance MedPrep Scholars Program (MedPrep) seek to support undergraduate students who are economically disadvantage and/or those who identify with groups that have been historically underrepresented in healthcare professions. The support provided for participating students help them to become more competitive applicants to health professions schools. Each year, SHPEP serves 80 scholars while MedPrep is offered to 20 scholars who will be rising college sophomores and juniors at the time of program participation.
A major component of the programs is centered on academic enrichment with a focus on supporting the improvement of scholars' performance in Pre-Health science courses. Supplemental courses are also offered to help scholars strengthen their learning and study skills. Outside of courses, scholars participate in practical experiences and career exposure seminars.
The 2019 programs will be held from June 14th - July 26th.
SHPEP and MedPrep Preceptors will lead pre-health science courses for class sizes of approximately 20-45 students. The cohort of program scholars is made up of undergraduate students from diverse backgrounds who generally have varying skillsets and require guidance for education advancement and career exploration. Ideal candidates for the SHPEP and MedPrep Preceptor positions are those interested in working with students who fit the demographics previously described. The Preceptor role provides a platform to exercise curriculum construction, as well as establish and execute course instruction and differentiation skills. Preceptors will be paid at a rate of $32.14 per hour.
Courses offered include-
Anatomy & Physiology
SHPEP and MedPrep Preceptors will be required to:
Understand the overall goals and objectives of the program
Attend job orientation and training sessions (dates to be determined)
Develop syllabus for assigned course to be approved by Course Director
Attend programs' briefing and debriefing sessions as well as special program ceremonies
Conduct meetings with Program Facilitators to discuss progress and other feedback related to respective course(s) as well as course management updates to prepare for upcoming class sessions
Prepare lectures and materials prior to each scheduled course session
Lead the execution of lessons planned for each scheduled course session and arrange for a substitute if a session must be missed
Host office hours to meet with program scholars throughout the duration of the program
Prepare, administer, and grade a pre-test, mid-term exam and final exam for evaluation of scholars and provide grades for progress assessments
Bachelors degree or equivalency.
Affiliation with Columbia University by means of a graduate level program
Education and training in science and/or mathematics
Previous teaching experience
Demonstration of leadership and organizational skills
