Assist in stewardship activities that promote forest health, facilitate education and recreation, and improve water quality in University-owned woodlands. Specific duties include trail and road maintenance, insect and disease detection, selective cutting and reforestation, invasive plant control and wildlife monitoring. Direct employees and volunteers in performance of stewardship activities. Act as lead person in operational and educational projects.
Education and Experience:
Graduation from high school and some experience in horticultural work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Special Licensure or Certification: May require North Carolina Pesticide License; North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License.
Position involves reading, understanding, delegating, and supervising the completion of assigned job tasks. Knowledge of trail maintenance and construction techniques; understanding of environmental impacts of trail use and mitigation of same. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, verbally and in writing.
Occasional weekend work required (2-3 events per calendar year). This position is considered Severe Weather Essential. Applicant will be required to report for work in weather related or other emergencies, even if the University is closed.
Applicant should possess 3 years experience in landscape maintenance tasks and activities involved in the daily operation of a park-like natural area. Applicant will have experience working independently, as well as directly with volunteers and the public. Prior experience with trail maintenance, landscape feature construction, and land clearing operations is preferred. Knowledge of invasive plant species management, native and ornamental trees, shrubs, and perennials is preferred. A North Carolina Pesticide Applicator's license is preferred. If applicant does not possess one at the time of hire, the applicant will be expected to successfully obtain one within 6 months of hire.
