Essential Job Duties:
The primary purpose of this position is to provide irrigation system maintenance and management for Grounds & Building Services. The Lead Irrigation Technician serves as the lead member of the irrigation crew and reports to the Irrigation Supervisor.
Primary duties of the Lead Irrigation Technician include, but are not limited to the following:
Providing installation, maintenance, and repairs to over 60 complex irrigation systems across NC State campuses.
Conducting regular system inspections and performs trouble shooting exercises.
Diagnosing problems with irrigation system, pumps, clocks, and valves, working with low voltage lighting systems and 2 wire systems and diagnosing issues with pumps.
Retrofit existing irrigation systems to accommodate new construction or various landscape/hardscape changes. Will program and operate irrigation controllers and central computer.
Position serves in a critical role and is essential to the operations of the University. May be required to work during adverse weather conditions and work even if the University closes. Aid in snow removal as directed by supervisors.
Performs specialized grounds work by maintaining, repairing, installing, rebuilding and programming the university's 60 computerized irrigation systems
Primary duties include: Install, replace, retrofit or repair all underground irrigation lines, sprinklers and valves. Maintain proper operation of pumping stations and filtration. Retrofit existing irrigation systems to accommodate new construction or various landscape/hardscape changes. Program and operate irrigation controllers and central computer.
Will fill in as supervisor when Horticultural Specialist Supervisor is out of the office
This position must be able to perform work both individually and as a team member.

High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification(s).
Optional Guidelines: Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
Must be able to communicate effectively verbally with supervisors and the general public and understand verbal and written instructions and other communications regarding work assignments and other matters.
Position serves in a critical role and employee must work during adverse weather conditions and may be required to work even if the University is closed to normal operations.
Ability to able to use wire locators, ohm meters, and have experience in troubleshooting and repairing irrigation systems.
Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds frequently and up to 60 pounds occasionally, with or without reasonable accommodations.
4-5 years of experience in the residential and commercial landscape industry with a minimum of 2-3 years working in the field of irrigation installation or repair.
Considerable knowledge in the field of irrigation, installation, maintenance and repairs.
The ability to diagnose problem with irrigation systems, pumps, clocks and valves.
Experience trouble shooting low voltage issues on both traditional and two-wire irrigation systems.
Knowledge of plant and turf care and light equipment maintenance.
A valid NC Driver’s license or the ability to obtain one within 60 days of employment.
North Carolina pesticide license required within 6 months of hire must be maintained throughout employment.
Irrigation Technician Certification required.
