Standardized Patients (SPs) are individuals who are carefully trained to portray a realistic patient experience for learners. This patient experience provides learners an opportunity to practice medical interviewing, counseling skills, physical exams, and interpersonal communication skills. To provide the learner with an optimal learning experience, standardized patients must learn all facets of a case portrayal.Â Â
For a case portrayal, theÂ SPsÂ are required to learn and memorize 1 - 4 different patient scenarios.Â SPs are also expected to review provided physical exam checklists, relevant provocative tests, provided videos, counseling and/or interview checklists, and any other materials provided pertaining to the case portrayal.Â Â A case script typically includes the memorization of the chief complaint, history of present illness, family history, social history, sexual history and review of systems symptoms. Displaying a wide range of emotions is not uncommon during case portrayals.Â During examination scenarios,Â SPs may be required to remember if a student completes each point (typically of a 10 point or more) required checklist that has also been memorized by the SP so they can grade accordingly at the end of the interaction.Â Â It is imperative that SPsÂ portray each case scenarioÂ exactly the same with each student, so each student has the same experience to complete their post encounter assignment accurately.Â
Standardized patients are also trained to evaluate and provide learners with specific constructive feedback, both written and oral, on the studentâ™s clinical performance.Â This constructive feedback is centered on the studentâ™s ability to perform a physical exam and relevant provocative test(s), therapeutic communication and interview/counseling skills.Â
The interview physical role of the Standardized Patient (SP) position consists of being a body model, portraying scripted cases, and providing verbal and/or written feedback on a student'sÂ verbal,Â paraverbal, and non-verbal communication skills during their encounter with the students during a scripted scenario.Â Â During testing scenarios, the SP may also be required to be knowledgeable on the physical examÂ components of an organ systemÂ (for example an abdominal exam).Â They are required to beÂ knowledgeableÂ onÂ how the exam should be performed, as well as any provocative tests that should be done, and how the exam should be done in aÂ logical order, while simultaneously observing the students draping techniques and verbal/non-verbal/paraverbalÂ communication skills.Â
During the interview physical role, a SP has faculty and students performing a multitude of different physicalÂ exams on them.Â These exams include taking vital signs, neurological,Â HEENTÂ and neck (head, ears, eyes, nose, throat), cardiopulmonary, abdominal, upper and lowerÂ musculoskeletalÂ including cervical andÂ thoracolumbarÂ spine exams.Â Â
High school diploma/GED required and/or equivalent combination of education and experience
Experience in acting/performing arts, education, or in health care preferred but not required
Must possess basic computer typing and data entry skills.
Ability to memorize scripted information
Excellent ability to recall learner experiences.
Exceptional communication skills
Ability to follow directions and accept constructive criticism.
Must be very reliable and able to accommodate a flexible schedule
Have reliable access to email for communication and scheduling.
Possesses a willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive campus community
