OBJECTIVE:

Provide efficient construction and maintenance of de-energized distribution systems; while

furthering knowledge and improving lineman skills.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

• Reports to Line Foreman, Chief Lineman or Supervisor of Field Services
• Directs: None
• Position is full time and is non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Performs work on de-energized distribution conductors under the direction of an Apprentice # 5 or above.
• May assist a Journeyman Lineman or above on energized structures, but may only work on de-energized conductors/equipment. May not work on or within four feet of energized conductors.
• Learns procedures for different types of grounding and the elements of proper connections; learns grounding methods and how to select and install jumpers.
• Learns the functions, types and parts of distribution transformers.
• Learns the different types and uses of generators and batteries.
• Follows all safety rules and regulations and immediately reports all accidents to assigned supervisor.
• Learns work procedures for de-energized line construction: materials, staking sheets, work orders.
• Learns the different types and uses of insulators and other insulating equipment.
• Operates automotive and construction equipment, when required, completing the necessary safety and mileage reports.
• Uses two-way radio in accordance with Co-op and FCC regulations.
• Learns basic computer skills.
• Replenishes truck stock on a regular basis or as required by crew chief.
• In addition, other duties of equal or lesser skill may be assigned by the Chief Lineman, Line Foreman, or assigned supervisor, to meet emergencies or other operating needs.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• This job requires reading, writing and mathematics; therefore, a high school diploma or the equivalent is preferred, but not required.
• At least six months experience as an Apprentice # 2, successfully completing applicable units of the Apprenticeship Program, or have equivalent knowledge/experience with an electric utility contractor.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

• Must be able to perform work by following simple instructions.
• Must be able to communicate with the public and co-workers.
• Must be available for call outs and willing to work extra and irregular hours.
• Must have legible handwriting.
• Must hold a valid Virginia Commercial Drivers License, Class A or Class B, and must also hold a current Department of Transportation, Medical Examiner’s Certificate.
• Must have the physical ability to perform the essential functions, duties and

responsibilities of the job, which include, but are not limited to, climbing poles and structures, bending, pulling, digging, lifting and carrying loads averaging 80 pounds

• Must comply with all General Job Requirements.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

• Working hours will be scheduled Monday-Friday between the hours of 6:30 am to 5:00 pm.
• Required to work indoors and outdoors with exposure to heat and cold.
• Employee shall not be required to work outdoors in rainy or other inclement weather, except when the Cooperative finds it necessary due to an emergency.
