General Statement of Duties Organizes, administers, coordinates, and leads a comprehensive program to ensure the safety, security, and maintenance of the WSGC Campus. This includes ensuring that health and safety protocols are created and implemented, overall maintenance and custodial services are provided in an efficient and economical manner, and all students, staff, and the community have a clean, safe, attractive, and healthy place in which to learn and work. About The Waldorf School of Garden City The Waldorf School of Garden City (WSGC) is an independent college preparatory day school for children in Nursery through Twelfth Grade. Established in 1947, the ten-acre campus is located in the suburban village of Garden City, just 18 miles from midtown Manhattan. The School’s beautiful 10-acre campus features playgrounds, gardens and playing fields bordered by a wooded “Nature Trail” which provides a visual and environmental boundary from the suburban houses and university buildings that surround us. The indoor facilities, all of which are connected, feature a historical main building entrance, a large gymnasium, a performance space, a modern library center, a fiber arts studio, three laboratories, a woodshop, music and practice rooms, a cafeteria, and a visual arts studio. The School also owns Camp Glen Brook, a 200-acre farm, in New Hampshire which is utilized as a part of our curriculum for grades 3-12. The Waldorf School of Garden City is accredited by the New York State Association of Independent Schools and the Association of Waldorf Schools of North America (AWSNA) and is recognized by the New York State Education Department. Job Functions and Responsibilities - Administer the Department of Facilities, Maintenance, and Custodial Services.
- Conduct regular inspections of all school facilities, grounds, and equipment to ensure that the highest standard of cleanliness, attractiveness, and safety are maintained. Recommend to the School Administrator any improvements needed.
- Coordinate and/or participate in the development of departmental and facility-wide Safety, Emergency Management, and EMS policies and procedures, and ensure that the school is following all state and federal regulations and guidelines.
- Liaise with Police, Fire, and other Emergency Services or other regulatory agencies.
- Develop, implement, and monitor an effective grounds maintenance program, including playground equipment, to ensure that the grounds are attractive and safe. Work cooperatively with the Early Childhood, Lower School, Physical Education, and Athletic personnel for the preparation of playing fields and facilities for athletics and school activities.
- Support the development of safety and security policies and protocols.
- Oversee snow removal and ice control activities so that safe conditions exist for the School to be opened in a timely manner. Supervise and direct tree and decorative planting and pruning, and athletic field maintenance to ensure safe and attractive grounds.
- Develop and implement a multi-year comprehensive maintenance plan that is both corrective and preventative for the upkeep of the building and grounds and major facilities systems (HVAC, mechanical, plumbing, electrical and structural) for the school. Identify mechanical and structural deficiencies, recommend, and supervise their repair and/or replacement.
- Recommends purchase of equipment and supplies.
- Confer and coordinate with school administrators on maintenance, repair, operational, safety, and security needs. Participate with other management personnel in the planning of renovations, alterations, major repair work, and new construction.
- Manage, direct and supervise independent contractors, architects, construction management firms, local building authorities, Fire Marshall, and various inspectors.
- Develop and supervise work and vacation schedules for all maintenance personnel. Recommend the hiring, continued employment, discipline, or dismissal of all maintenance personnel.

- Awareness of environmental laws, rules, and regulations affecting the operation and maintenance of school buildings, grounds, and facilities.
- Understanding the principles and practices of institutional or school buildings, grounds, and facilities safety and security precautions.
- Considerable knowledge of school building, grounds, and facilities maintenance and operations.
- Considerable knowledge of heating plant and air-conditioning operations, maintenance, and safety precautions.
- Demonstrated knowledge of construction codes, health and safety codes, environmental laws, rules, and regulations affecting the operation and maintenance of school buildings, grounds, and facilities. Knowledge of financial and management practices, purchasing, supervision, and motivation of personnel.
- Ability to plan, organize and supervise the work of subordinate supervisors and custodial trades, and other building maintenance staff.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret, prepare and work from blueprints, sketches, and diagrams.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
- Have excellent integrity and demonstrate good moral character and initiative, leadership skills, and the ability to motivate staff.
Minimum qualifications - Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
- Minimum of five year’s experience supervising custodial and maintenance personnel.
