Health and Safety Manager

Position Number: 008303 Department: Safety & Security (Adm) Employment Type: Permanent - Full-time Months Per Year: 12 Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Plan, develop and implement long-range health and safety goals. Manage health and safety programs including, but not limited to, Asbestos, Hearing Conservation, Indoor Air Quality, Bloodborne Pathogens, Industrial Hygiene, Personal Protective Equipment, Respiratory Protection, Vehicle Safety, Confined Space, Lock Out Tag Out, and Electrical Safety. Independently investigate complex regulatory issues and make final decisions that affect campus operations. Lead, motivate and supervise three health and safety staff members. Assign individual projects, evaluate capabilities, and monitor progress. Develop a professional development plan for health and safety staff members. Develop operational budget and justify the need for major expenditures. Conduct health and safety compliance audits, measure results, and develop internal controls to ensure institutional regulatory compliance. Develop health and safety quality assurance standards. Serves as the liaison with federal, state and local authorities in matters related to health and safety. Serve as the subject matter expert for routine situations. Guide and direct health and safety operational committees. Collaborate with department administrators to identify regulatory issues, implement solutions, and promote a proactive safety culture. Design and implement new programs to address unique health and safety issues. Develop health and safety media communication standards. Develop and implement a training and outreach plan. Present health and safety information to senior level administrators on a regular basis. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the campus community and regulatory agencies. Minimum Experience / Education: Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and two years of related experience; or Master's degree in a physical science, biological science, environmental science/engineering, occupational safety, industrial technology or related discipline; or equivalent combination of training and experience. Some positions may require additional training or licensure. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. University Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and six years of related experience; or Master's degree in a physical science, biological science, environmental science/engineering, occupational safety, industrial technology or related discipline and four years of related experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience. Some positions may require additional training or licensure. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. Preferred Education Skills and Experience: Master's degree in business administration, public administration, management, physical science, biological science, environmental science/engineering, occupational safety, industrial technology, or related discipline. Relevant professional certification (e.g., ASP, CSP, CIH, ARM, etc.). Seven or more years of demonstrated environmental health and safety program development, leadership, and communication skills. Experience with establishing an environmental health and safety management system in a higher education or public setting. Experience using technology to automate processes and manage projects. Demonstrated leadership, communication, and team building skills. Demonstrated ability to investigate complex incidents, determine root causes and gain University administrators support to implement corrective actions. Experience developing emergency response plans particularly for chemical response or construction settings. Safety professional experience with Electrical Safety, Confined Space, Lock Out / Tag Out environment and procedures and Industrial Hygiene. Professional Environmental, Health and Safety experience. Leadership, and communication skills equal to the requirements of the position. Experience with establishing a health and safety management system in a higher education or public setting. Experience using technology to automate processes and manage projects. Demonstrated leadership, communication, and team building skills. Demonstrated ability to investigate complex incidents, determine root causes and gain University administrators support to implement remedial actions.
