The Academic Support Specialist provides support, training, and consultation for faculty in the use of instructional methods and technologies based on sound educational practices to improve the teaching and learning experience.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
This role reports directly to the Director of Educational Development and Technology.
Works closely with other team members and provides Media Specialist backup AV support when required.
Assists faculty with the implementation of contemporary instructional design methods and educational technology to promote positive student performance outcomes; this includes but is not limited to:
The use of Blackboard and the conversion of courses including but not limited to electronic instructional materials, assessments, and course websites to support a contemporary remote learning environment;
The design, development, and integration of multimedia learning materials (audio, video, simulations, role-plays, games, etc.) for use in online, hybrid, and face-to-face courses;
Test construction assistance, psychometric analysis and management/analysis of Blackboard analytics before/after inception;
Designing and facilitating workshops for faculty and staff in instructional design and the use of educational technology as indicated by trends identified in the curriculum management plan;
The creation of engaging learning activities and compelling course content that enhances retention and transfer;
The creation of learning objectives that align with program competencies and learning metrics that measure them;
Proctoring exams as necessary, and
Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Educational Qualifications
Two years to five years of experience in a related role (required) A Bachelor’s degree in education, instructional design, or a closely related field (required)
Preferred Educational Qualification: Master’s degree in education, or instructional design
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Experience in the design and development of instructional materials, online courses, and distance learning-based curriculum.
• Strong interpersonal, written, oral communication, and organizational skills. Ability to work with faculty, staff, and students in a courteous and helpful manner.
• Knowledge and experience in using a wide variety of software (MS Office and Image editing tools such as Adobe Photoshop) and hardware tools related to authoring, courseware design, and web development for developing online course materials.
• Experience in using a learning management system (Blackboard experience preferred) to develop and design quality courses.
• Good proofreading practices and skills.
• Basic understanding of test performance indices.
• Proven working experience in instructional design and with instructional technology
• Excellent knowledge of learning theories and instructional design models
• Lesson and curriculum planning skills
• Ability to work well in a fast-paced environment with a diverse student and faculty population.
Job requires repetitively lifting average weight objects with repetitive bending and stooping. Frequently lifts heavy objects but alternating with lighter activities.
Job may require physical exertion such as long periods of standing.
Job may require above-average agility and dexterity.
Regular exposure to favorable conditions such as those found in a normal office.
