This is an excellent opportunity in Arizona for candidates with experience in maintaining Bentgrass, Tall Fescue, Bluegrass and Ryegrass in a high heat climate.
The Assistant Golf Course Superintendent is responsible for supervising the maintenance of the golf course(s) and activities of the employees. This includes monitoring job performance and daily playing conditions for quality standards, maintaining cleanliness and organization of the maintenance facility (to include equipment, materials, and tools), participating in agronomic operations, and keeping accurate and timely records of all business activities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following and other duties may be assigned:
Perform, plan, and supervise routine maintenance activities as needed to include mowing greens, changing cups, course set up and raking bunkers, mowing fairways, tees and rough.
Participate in the daily assignment of equipment to employees and inspect for proper use, cleaning, and storage to assigned parking.
Stage designated equipment and tools to prepare for the following day.
Coordinate with mechanics to ensure preventative maintenance, repairs and readiness of equipment fleet.
Participate in the daily monitoring of putting greens (moisture, firmness, green speed and clipping yield) using measuring devices and records data.
Observe and evaluate playing conditions (moisture, mowing quality, bunker raking, course set up) to take corrective action or report to Superintendent.
Form application of fertilizer and plant protectants to golf course turf through the safe and proper use of spray equipment.
Maintain effective employee and public relations.
Monitor employee uniforms (shirts, boots, helmets and personal protective equipment) to provide service to the employees and ensure compliance of uniform policy.
Assist the Superintendent in keeping records of maintenance activities, including but not limited to job tracking, and chemical and fertilizer applications as required by law.
Assist in the operation of the irrigation system by using Rainbird Control System and pump station operation, field observations and scouting for proper moisture, sprinkler adjustments and repairs.
Apply all products in compliance with manufacturer labels and Arizona State Laws.
Follow and comply with company and departmental safety policies to ensure a safe work environment.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Must have a working knowledge of the following:
Construction and maintenance of golf course tees, fairways and greens.
Seeding and maintenance of types of turf used on golf courses.
Planting, cultivating, pruning and caring for plants, shrubs and trees.
Characteristics and proper use of various fertilizers and soil conditioners.
Herbicides and pest control methods and materials.
Drainage control methods.
Computerized watering and irrigation systems including wells, pumps and automatic controls.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office is preferred.
Minimum 2 years’ experience working on a golf course maintenance crew.
2 years of well-rounded golf course experience.
Education / Certifications:
A minimum two-year turf certificate in turf grass management from a recognized college or university.
Certified pesticide applicator in the state of Arizona or ability to acquire upon hire.
