Facilities Management and Planning (FMP) is responsible for the following: the operations and maintenance of University/Housing buildings and grounds; the planning, design and construction of new operations; motor pool operations; property control; equipment inventory; and delivery services. The entire University is the recipient of services performed by FMP. The SOU Ashland campus consists of 175 acres of grounds, 140 acres of which are under active use and maintenance. FMP also maintains 21 major buildings comprising of over 1 million square feet of building space. FMP is staffed by 45 fulltime personnel and is responsible for approximately 9% of the University's total budget. The purpose of this position is to help maintain the grounds of the University particularly at Family Housing, as part of a team of horticultural and landscape specialists.
Minimum Classification Qualifications:
Pesticide applicator's license may be required based on position duties; AND Two years experience as a grounds keeper which included plant care; OR An Associate's degree in Landscape Technology or Horticulture; OR Completion of a Landscape Certification program or license in a horticultural specialty.
3+ years Landscape/Construction Industry or Facilities Maintenance experience
Advanced knowledge of landscape irrigation systems and system components: ability to install and repair irrigation systems without direct supervision. Irrigation Association Certifications, including CLIA. CID, or CIC highly regarded.
Detailed knowledge of industry-standard landscape maintenance operations, practices, and equipment.
Able to utilize labor, supplies, and equipment in the efficient completion of on-demand and scheduled work tasks.
Aerial lift experience and ability to work at heights up to 100 vertical feet.
All Listed Duties:
Makes recommendations to supervisor about landscape to achieve the weekly landscape maintenance goals
Plants, prunes and fertilizes shrubs and trees
Mows and edges lawns using appropriate equipment
Aerates, applies top-dressing and removes thatch as needed
Maintains equipment according to Department procedures
Over-seeds and applies fertilizer as needed to maintain healthy lawns
Identifies problems (insects, diseases, pests, etc.)and takes action to remedy and informs supervisor
Operates, installs or repairs
Uses knowledge of specific trees and shrubs while pruning to maintain health and aesthetics
Understands and uses appropriate methods of pruning various trees and shrubs
ls familiar with use and maintenance of pruning tools and equipment
Uses knowledge of specific trees and shrubs as a guide for appropriate pruning procedures
Follows department saftey rules
Making repairs to damaged landscapes
Assists in planning, designing and completing campus landscape projects
Provides suggestions regarding effective and efficient maintenance of lawns, trees, shrubs and other landscape areas
Makes recommendations to supervisor regarding appropriate type and quality of equipment, tools, fertilizers and herbicides being used
Determines most efficient work plan for landscape team
Schedules mowing, irrigation, planting and pruning activities to coincide with campus events including layout and painting of sports fields
Reviews work plan with supervisor to set daily and weekly priorities and monitor department goals
Retrieves and assigns work orders, coordinating with other crew members and divisions on divisions that require sequential work implementation
Works with others to ensure safety procedures are followed
Serves on ad hoc Grounds maintenance teams and assists other FMP divisions as needed for special events (Commencement, etc.) or emergency situations
Troubleshoots and performs minor repairs on equipment
Refers major repairs to the appropriate person
Transports litter, plant debris and brush to dump or compost pile
Remove ice and snow from walkways, parking lots and building entrances using plows, shovels, blowers or de-icer
Cleans drains, catch basins and gutters
Attends and participates in staff meetings
Interacts with faculty, staff, students, parents, agencies and private vendors in a courteous and respectful manner
Removes trash from all landscape areas and empties trash cans as needed
Cleans Grounds shop, restrooms, vehicles and equipment weekly
Attends meetings and training seminars
Maintain work files and records as requested
Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor
Special Instructions to Applicants:
Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
Must be able to work additional hours and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment background check.
