The EH&S Environmental Public Health Officer will work with the Environmental Public Health (EPH) team providing services to Harvard students, faculty and staff in all EPH disciplines, including Food Safety, Swimming Pool Safety, Drinking Water, the Environmental Control of Communicable Disease, and Pest Control. The EPH Officer will also be cross-trained to rotate on-call as an EH&S Emergency Responder, and will participate on occasion in on-call duties to back up other EPH staff.
Swimming Pool Safety The EPH Officer will conduct annual assessments of campus swimming pools and special purpose pools to help facilitate compliance with the State Sanitary Code for Swimming Pools, and to assist with readiness for yearly regulatory permit inspections, as needed. Monitor pool water quality and pool facilities on an occasional basis to facilitate compliance with 105 CMR 435.00. Assist Athletics staff with the development of compliance strategies for implementation of post-inspection corrective action plans.
Drinking Water The EPH Officer will participate in the EH&S Water Quality Program, as needed. Conduct evaluations of local building conditions affecting drinking water on campus properties. Facilitate reviews of cross connection control and backflow prevention device testing. Analyze drinking water test results for selected parameters. Assist with other drinking water related issues as required.
Environmental Control of Communicable Disease Participates with the investigation and control of environmental factors which facilitate the spread of communicable disease in non-lab (community) settings. Work with University Health Services and other University stakeholders to investigate, develop and communicate corrective action plans, and provide remediation strategies and support. Liaise with Regulatory Authorities, providing communicable disease control assistance on campus as needed.
Food Safety The EPH Officer will conduct routine, HACCP, and follow-up food safety inspections to determine compliance with 105 CMR 590.000, assist with the development of corrective action strategies, provide employee food safety training including ServSafe® instruction and proctored exams, conduct food establishment plan reviews, update HACCP plans and carry out other responsibilities related to the provision of food safety services.
Pest Control Assists the Senior EPH Officer with pest control duties, interfacing with Harvard students, faculty, staff, pest control vendors and regulatory agencies when needed. Regular pest control duties include inspecting for pests in food service establishments, construction sites and other locations, review of IPM communication logs and corrective actions, reporting pest issues to the Senior EPH Officer, and assisting with response to urgent pest control matters. Working with the Sr. EPH Officer, reviews vendor reports and assists with plan review for new construction and renovation projects.

B.S. in Environmental Health, Biology or related science or an equivalency of professional training, certifications and work experience.
MA Registered Sanitarian or Registered Environmental Health Specialist credential preferred.
Eligible to become RS or REHS certified preferred.
Strong knowledge of Federal and State food safety regulations required. Minimum of three years' experience conducting food safety inspections at a variety of establishment types and sizes required. Experience with plan review to determine food code compliance for new construction and renovation of commercial food establishments preferred.
Candidate will possess excellent oral and written communication skills and have experience with the development and delivery of effective, interactive classroom instruction.
ServSafe® Instructor and Proctor credentials preferred. Must be eligible to become a ServSafe® Instructor and Proctor.
Certified Pool Operator credential preferred.
Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Access or other database management program. Some knowledge of Microsoft Publisher or other desktop publishing software preferred. Experience with use of electronic inspection systems preferred. Candidate demonstrates ability to effectively use thermocouples, bi-metallic and digital stem thermometers, reagents to test swimming pool water, litmus paper and other scientific equipment as required.
Special Requirements: Participates in EHS Emergency Response program on a rotating basis. While on call, responds to emergencies during business and non-business hours.Candidate will obtain, within one year of hire, certification as a Certified Pool Operator, ServSafe Instructor and Proctor, 24 Hour HAZWOPER, and other related training credentials provided by EH&S. Participates in occasional inspection activities outside of normal work hours.
