Bachelor's Degree in Business, Management, Forestry, Landscape Design, Horticulture or related field. Four years experience in Urban Forestry, Landscaping, Grounds Maintenance, Horticulture or experience in a related field. Five years of supervisory experience preferred. Certifications may be required. A combination of education, experience, and training that would produce the required knowledge and abilities could be considered.
Nature & Purpose of Position/Usual Duties:
Serve as Assistant Director in all areas of Landscape & Campus Services department management. Serve as the University Urban Forest Manager.
Primary Responsibilities (Staff Positions Only):
Responsible for the Landscape & Campus Services department activities, including but not necessarily limited to the following: planning, servicing, scheduling, and generally overseeing the daily performance of grounds maintenance duties and campus services employees. Delegates work to supervisors and other grounds areas. Trains and evaluates all employees in the grounds department. Purchases equipment and materials required for grounds maintenance. Oversees landscaping and future development of university grounds. Oversees department payroll, personnel, and working relations with other departments. Makes rounds through various sections of campus to observe progress of work and programs. Responsible for employee evaluation management and professional development of Landscape Services staff. Manages and participates in the operations of the SHSU Urban Forest Management and SHSU Tree Campus USA, and Campus Tree Risk programs. Manages and updates the GIS-based campus tree inventory and provides technical expertise for any and all tree-related issues on campus. Diagnoses and determines appropriate treatments for tree insects and diseases. Interprets building plans, provides tree protection guidelines for construction projects, and assists in organizing the design of new tree installations. Develops and maintains tree maintenance specifications for the SHSU campus. Maintains campus trees using agricultural equipment including chainsaws, pole saws, ropes, harnesses, ladders, wood chippers, tractors, sprayers, aerial lifts, and other heavy equipment. Supervises and trains staff participating in the maintenance of the Campus Urban Forest. Creates and provides records pertaining to the management of the Campus Urban Forest. Plans Arbor Day. Ensures that supplies, materials, and equipment are maintained to perform job duties. Provides excellent customer service to internal and external customers. Plans, supervises and directs the daily work of grounds, recycling, shredding and moving services. Responsible for all department activities and programs as required. Performs other related duties as assigned.
