The College of Fine Arts at Boston University seeks a Technical Director (TD) for Wheelock Family Theatre. This position plans, organizes, manages and participates in the scenic construction process for all mainstage shows, special events and year-round WFT Education productions. Since 1981, Wheelock Family Theatre at Boston University (WFT@BU) has provided affordable and award-winning, professional theatre and theatre arts education to families in the greater Boston area through an unwavering commitment to inclusion, diversity, and access. The TD is a hands-on position, requiring an experienced set builder and cost estimator, who ensures that all materials for purchase or rental are procured on time and on budget. The TD works closely with technical staff hired on a per show basis in the roles of Properties Designer, Scenic Charge, Lead Electrician, Sound Engineer and all designers. Participation in the design process is essential. Experience and expertise in drafting working drawings, ideally using VectorWorks or AutoCAD, is important. The TD attends all production meetings and technical rehearsals and maintains the built shows scenery during the run. Time management is a crucial skill and the TD will be an effective planner and create a realistic build schedule for each project. This position reports to the WFT Production Manager.
Work schedule will include evening and weekends as necessary around production schedule. Experience with counterweight rigging systems and hand or computer aided drafting programs. 3 - 5 years of experience.
