Job SummaryUnder minimum supervision from the Supervisor of the Utility plant, the Utility Plant Chemist performs routine and emergent testing. Analyzes, monitors, and maintains the plant equipment and campus utility distribution systems which includes Cooling towers, condensing water, chilled water, steam and condensate, heating hot water, compressed air and demineralized water. Uses current institute sustainability practices and environmental guidelines or policies to analyze and resolve complex problems, analyzes possible solutions using technical experience, judgment, and precedents.
Essential Job Duties - Responsible for following all safety procedures and maintaining a safe and secure work environment
- Perform various analytical testing to accurately assess the performance of the water treatment, related to the utility plant
- Adjust treatment chemical feed rates & perform various tasks as required to maintain critical parameters within specified ranges
- Review operating logs and trends critical data to identify related chemistry problems and performance degradation trends
- Identify, investigate, report on, and take proactive steps as required to address potential problems, deficiencies, and enhancement opportunities
- Perform basic servicing, reagent replacements, calibrations, etc. on critical on-line and portable analytical analyzers and instrumentation to ensure accurate and reliable performance
- Peform inventory, order, and receive chemical deliveries to always ensure adequate supply
- Attend regulatory compliance and specific technical training as required to maintain skills to meet emerging permit work practices
- Prepare chemical solutions or mixtures for use in analyses or procedures to be performed
- Prepare reports and validate test results
- Monitor, correct, or report on problems with permanently connected laboratory supplies of campus utilities
- Maintain analytical equipment used in power plant water chemistry analysis
- Work with other team members, maintenance crafts, plant O&M group, plant management team, engineering support, and other departments
- Provide technical direction to and/or inspect and verify the work of construction, operating and maintenance personnel, or outside contractors, engage in chemistry laboratory activities
- Perform other duties as assigned
Basic QualificationsEducation and Experience
- Bachelor's Degree in chemistry, biochemistry or another related science
- 4 years of chemistry laboratory analysis experience
- Business acumen pertaining to the utility industry
- Strong understanding and working knowledge of plant processes and power plant chemistry principles
- Ability to read, interpret, and understand technical language in wiring and control diagrams
- Ability to modify and/or adapt designs, procedures, or methods to make necessary alterations and modifications
- Proficient in the use of MS Word, Excel, and Outlook
- Maintain a valid California driver's license throughout the course of employment
- Strong English oral and written communication skills; use correct punctuation, vocabulary, spelling, and sentence structure; follow written instructions
Physical
- Must be in good health with the physical strength and agility to lift up to 50 pounds on a daily basis, bend in all directions, climb stairs and ladders, squeeze with arms and hands, operate machinery using hands, and work outdoors in all kinds of weather
- Ability to distinguish among colors and work in confined spaces
Preferred Qualifications - ME Degree in an appropriate construction or maintenance related technical or engineering field from an accredited college or university
- Institutional and Higher Education experience
- Proficiency with Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS)
- Proficiency with automated work order system and timekeeping application
