Under general supervision of the Superintendent of Maintenance Services, the Carpenter works in a multi-functional team made up of other carpenters, painters, and roofers to perform skilled carpentry work in the alteration, repair and maintenance of buildings, floors, stairways, partitions, doors, door and window hardware, locks, windows, screens, scaffolding, concrete forms and placement, wood fixtures, and furniture. These duties are performed either on the 1st shift, or another alternative shift based on the needs of the University.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are customary for this position, but are not to be construed as all-inclusive. Duties may be added, deleted and assigned based on management discretion and institutional needs.
Installs structures or fixtures such as windows, frames, floorings, ceilings, trim, doors or hardware to include: Glass installation, removal, and glazing,lays floor tile and carpet tile, and installs cove base, installs and repairs ceiling grid and tiles, repair and maintenance of overhead doors, as well as, installation and maintenance of a large variety of door hardware and systems, and installs framing and drywall
Builds or repairs cabinets, bookcases, chests, etc. using power saws, joiners, wood lathes, planers and boring, sanding and mortising machines
Performs routine preventative maintenance to the interior of buildings by inspecting ceiling or floor tile, roof systems, drywall, glass, doors, hardware, and framing, to detect broken or damaged structures to ensure the physical condition of buildings does not deteriorate
Uses tools ranging from common hand and power tools, such as hammers, hoists, saws, drills, and wrenches, levels, sanders, etc.
Cleans, sharpens and repairs hand and bench tools following established safety rules and regulations to maintain a safe and clean environment
Record type and cost of maintenance or repair work
Operates university vehicles and equipment
Secondary Duties and Responsibilities
Maintains excellent communication/customer service with Building Coordinators and all other DFM team members
Performs related duties as assigned
Knowledge and Skills Essential for Success
Mechanical & operational knowledge of all machines & tools related to the carpentry trade, including their designs, uses, repair and maintenance
Ability to study specifications in blueprints, sketches or building plans to prepare project layout and determine dimensions and materials required
Ability to verify trueness of structure using plumb bob and level
Ability to provide on-the-job training/coaching to team members in your field of expertise
Strong communication skills and time management abilities
Ability to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems
Ability to monitor and assess performance of yourself to make improvements or take corrective action
Must be familiar with and have experience in the use of radio protocol
Ability to work effectively in a service-oriented environment subject to frequently changing priorities.
Ability to work well individually and as a team member
Maintaining composure, keeping emotions in check, controlling anger, and avoiding aggressive behavior, even in very difficult situations
Must possess strong detail to detail on tasks and projects
Possess basic computer skills, familiar with web/internet navigation, and willingness to learn and utilize new technology based products as applicable
Adhere to all University policies and regulations
Physical Abilities Required
Ability to assemble and fasten materials to make frameworks or props using hand tools, wood screws, nails, dowel pins or glue
Ability to shape or cut materials to specified measurements using hand tools, machines or power saws
Ability to remove damaged or defective parts or sections of structures and repair or replace using hand tools
Ability to bend, crawl, reach, kneel, climb ladders & scaffolding, and able to navigate tight spaces, as well as working in hot, noisy environments, working aloft and in confined spaces
Must be able to perform strenuous physical labor, which includes heavy lifting, carrying up to 50 lbs.
Must be able to wear protective eye wear, gloves, ear wear and foot wear during work times for one's safety as the task dictates
Job Requirements:
High School Diploma/GED
Three-years work experience in one of the construction trades
Must possess and maintain a valid Kentucky driver's license
Ability to operate WKU vehicles
