The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) is the sixth largest transportation system in the United States, with a vast network of fixed route services including bus, subway/elevated, trackless trolley, light rail, and commuter rail serving a 2,200 square mile service region.
Our Center City Philadelphia headquarters is seeking to fill a Senior Project Architect position that requires an extensive background in architecture and construction to design and manage projects within the SEPTA Bridges and Buildings Department. This key position leads multi-discipline engineering teams through design, permitting, material procurement and into construction. During construction, you will provide construction related services for both SEPTA’s internal force account construction team as well as third party contractors. Due to the varying project sizes (anything from emergency repair work to large scale station renovation projects), you will apply intensive and diversified knowledge of architectural principles and practices in broad areas of design and construction. You must make decisions independently regarding engineering problems and construction methods and as such must have a working knowledge of best business practices. The ability to communicate effectively with all levels of staff within SEPTA and outside the Authority, both in an executive, non-technical environment as well as specialized expertise to lead discussions with project teams is required.
Consults with managerial level as necessary in project/program definition.
Exercises proper judgment in application of advanced architectural principles.
Assists in preparation of budgets, schedules and schematic design options for proposed projects.
Plans and prepares schedules, construction drawings and specifications for each project.
Demonstrates effective technical writing skills.
Provides highly specialized technical expertise in support of project/program activities.
Manages aspects of various projects as assigned by the department manager to ensure that project planning, design, implementation and completion meets the requirements and needs of SEPTA and the requirements of all the agencies, governments, special interest groups and the general public to which SEPTA is responsible.
Reviews construction documents prepared by third party consultants for accuracy and assurance of compliance to SEPTA Design standards.
Assists manager on request in furtherance of their duties.
Complies with all Authority and departmental safety and security policies and procedures as well as all applicable job safety responsibilities. Reports any safety concerns, compromises or hazards affecting operations, the public, self and/or other employees. Responsible for personal safety and is encouraged to promote the safety of others.
Responsible for Architectural design and analysis.
Responsibilities shall include conceptual, preliminary, design progress, final design, scheduling, and costing of projects as directed by senior level supervision/management.
Demonstrates familiarities with all phases of a design project from Concept Design through to Construction Administration.
Implement design plans, specifications, and construction procedures in areas of responsibility.
Participate in field investigations relative to adequacy of end product(s) being acceptable.
Accumulate sufficient knowledge of current state-of-the-art processes, procedures, and availability as they affect one’s assignment.
Possess the experience to detect appropriate contract/specification compliance in work assignments involving internal and/or third party contractors.
Continually utilizes appropriate construction methods and materials and employs proper methods of surveying and inspection.
Reviews, analyzes, and makes recommendations regarding designs, plans, and specifications.
Generates written memoranda, technical reports, audits, etc. and interfaces with government agencies when appropriate to support compliance and permitting requirements.
Ensures that all applicable codes, accessibility, and regulatory agency guidelines are followed.
Coordinates the ordering of materials and equipment for repair, alteration projects, and new construction.
Confers with appropriate administrative and construction/maintenance personnel regarding proposed construction and alteration programs and plans.
Interprets and carries out complex oral and written instructions including the reading and interpretation of blueprints and specifications.
Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with field and administrative personnel.
Trains Project Architects in the duties of project management.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor of Architecture Degree and six (6) years of proven relevant architectural experience or an equivalent combination of architecture and project management experience
Registered Architect licensed in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania required.
Must be proficient in in the latest versions of the following programs: AutoCAD, Revit, Microsoft Office Suite, Microsoft Project, eBuilder, Adobe Photoshop, Blue Beam.
Must possess excellent verbal and written communication.
Must possess a working knowledge of the International Building Code, National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA), Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA), and state and local permitting requirements.
