Founded in Chicago in 1876, Sacred Heart Schools at Sheridan Road (Hardey Preparatory for Boys and Academy of the Sacred Heart for Girls) are independent, Catholic, single-sex elementary schools committed to academic excellence within the context of a Christian, faith-based community. The educational mission is deeply rooted in the 200-year tradition of the Society of the Sacred Heart and shared with the Network of Sacred Heart Schools located in 30 countries; including 25 schools in the United States and Canada. In first through eighth grades, girls and boys are taught in single-sex classrooms, but follow a similar curriculum and share in many activities. Position Description
Sacred Heart Schools is seeking a School Housekeeping professional that ensures the cleanliness of the facility under the direction of the Housekeeping Supervisor. They will perform a variety of cleaning duties, including maintaining public and private spaces to the school’s standards. Duties include, but are not limited to, vacuuming, mopping, surface cleaning, dusting, and bathroom services, including all other cleaning needs of the school as assigned by the Housekeeping Supervisor. Regular hours are Monday - Friday, 4:00pm - 12:00am.
Essential Job Functions
• Cleans and maintains the cleanliness of the school, including classrooms, hallways, offices, and all other areas of the facility • Cleans floors and stairwells by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, or vacuuming, including application of spot cleaning treatment when needed • Wipes and cleans desktops, chairs, shelves, cafeteria furniture, equipment in Cafeteria, and other surfaces • Responds to all service requests from the Housekeeping Supervisor • Uses ladders, dusts, and washes furniture, walls, machines, and other equipment; cleans ceilings and dusts/polishes light fixtures; washes windows and blinds • Moves cabinets, boxes, furniture, and equipment to clean areas, either manually or by using hand trucks • May remove stains from surfaces as rugs, drapes, walls, and floors using chemicals and cleaning solutions • Services, cleans, and supplies restrooms • Gathers and empties trash and recycling • Restocks consumable supplies in school restrooms and kitchens, as needed • Addresses any wet floor conditions caused by spills, weather, backed up plumbing, etc., in a timely and urgent fashion, preventing hazards and/or accidents • Addresses cleaning accidents related to student/adult matters, which may include blood born pathogens or other bodily fluids • Monitors and reports new and existing facility issues and hazards that need to be addressed • Keeps housekeeping storage closets and breakroom neat and orderly, and maintains cleaning supplies and equipment in good working order • Supports the maintenance of school cleaning standards during all in-house construction projects • Supports special events with cleanup • Completes other non-routine cleaning projects as assigned, including special summer initiatives • Follows procedures for the use of chemical cleaners and cleaning equipment to prevent personal injury and damage to floors, fixtures, and equipment • Mixes water and detergents or acids in containers to prepare cleaning solutions according to specifications • Fulfills other duties as assigned
Qualities and Requirements
• One+ years of cleaning experience; experience in a school or mid to large sized facility preferred • General knowledge of techniques for cleaning, cleaning products, and supplies • Physically able to reach, stretch, bend, twist, and walk during the daily routine, with the ability to stand for long periods of time; physically able to push/pull/carry/lift vacuum cleaner and other machinery for extended periods of time; ability to lift 50 pounds • Ability to work on multiple tasks simultaneously and change priorities with little notice to address unpredictable issues • Working knowledge of hygiene standards and proper response (chemical use, blood borne pathogens, alerts to hazards, etc.) • Ability to work well independently and with a partner or team • Can-do attitude with a willingness to help where needed • Good communication skills • Ability to maintain positive and effective working relationships with department heads, supervisors, colleagues, and other school faculty and staff • Reliable and punctual with dedicated professionalism to position duties • Able to adapt to changing schedules or routines • Able to work nights, weekends, and occasional holidays, depending on assigned schedule
