Energy Piping Distribution Manager

Energy & Sustainability is comprised of three interactive teams: Campus Sustainability Office, Energy Management and Utilities Distribution and Production, which work together to achieve our obligations and seize opportunities to reduce our environmental footprint while providing vital utilities services to the Ithaca campus.
Energy Management's goal is to cost effectively minimize Cornell's energy use and associated environmental impacts. The Energy Management staff work to identify and implement conservation focused outreach, maintenance, energy studies, and capital projects to meet the university's needs with less energy use. The program includes all of the Ithaca, NY campus; Geneva Experiment Station and other off-central campus facilities in the region.

The Utilities section of Energy and Sustainability operates the University energy infrastructure system on a 24 hour, 365 day per year basis. Production facilities include a combined heat and power facility which provides both the steam for heat and electricity for campus. All of the water for campus is provided by a university owned potable water filtration plant. Electricity from the local utility is fed through a university owned electric substation. Utilities is also responsible for all of the distribution and collection systems located on campus including steam, chilled water, electricity, potable water and waste water.
Position Summary
Serve as a thought leader for energy distribution systems. Manage all aspects of the steam, hot water, chilled water and natural gas distribution systems. Responsible for guiding all activities related to these systems to ensure safe, reliable, efficient, and environmentally responsible operation. Defines and oversees all maintenance programs, both corrective and preventative. Must understand the function of the system and how it will react to failures. Responsible for response to equipment/system failures in partnership with FM trades support, on a 24/7 basis.
Additional ongoing responsibilities include regular hydraulic and thermal modeling on the steam and CHW systems as well as frequent map reviews and documentation management.
Act in lead position for all capital projects associated with this set of utilities systems. Responsibilities include capital planning, scoping, design management, budget management, bidding and construction oversight. Provide project management and technical support services related to major energy distribution and construction capital projects, including capital construction, maintenance, and master planning. Project value will range from <$1M to $9M and will include highly complex and interconnected systems.
This position will participate in all utility decarbonization feasibility studies and resulting projects, and act as lead for steam to hot water conversions.

We require these qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or technical equivalent.
- Driver's license required.
- More than ten years of extensive knowledge and experience in underground energy piping systems such as steam, chilled water, and natural gas supply and distribution systems.
- Extensive operational and systems knowledge of energy, site/civil, and broader utilities.
- Extensive knowledge of project management and project experience related to a full range of utility infrastructure.
- Familiarity with distribution design, confined space management, excavation management, hazardous materials, and utility mapping.
- Excellent communication and coordination skills involving large and complicated stakeholder groups.
- Experience with MS office suite, autocad, microstation and system modeling software.
- Demonstrated experience performing and managing engineering, planning, construction, and maintenance related to industrial/utility mechanical systems.
- Construction knowledge in bidding/negotiating contracts; coordinating inspections; preparing construction documents; managing project budgets and schedules; processing payment requisitions and change orders; approving submittals, as-built drawings, and requests-for-information; overseeing mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and control system construction installations; performing inspections; preparing punch-lists; and providing or supervising commissioning services.

You will be a top candidate with our preferred qualifications:
- New York State Professional Engineering license
- 10+ years demonstrated design and O&M experience in a power production or energy distribution setting.
- Coursework with continuing demonstrated field work in thermal and fluid systems.
- Demonstrated Proficiency in software based applications commonly used in the engineering environment such as Fluid or Thermal modeling, Solid modeling, and FEA applications.
- Project Management Professional certification
