This position is responsible for a wide variety of construction and maintenance functions to support the operations of the cooperative. This includes working with poles, operating and maintaining manual and power tools, and excavating.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Required: High school diploma or equivalent
CPR and first aid certified*
Valid Driver’s License
Class A Commercial Driver’s License*
Successfully completed the Rural Electric Apprenticeship Program (REAP) or its equivalent
One year of experience as an Apprentice Lineman IV
*Six-month grace period to obtain certifications and licenses if employee does not have these at time of employment.
Preferred: Experience with another rural electric co-op or distribution electric company.
Experience overseeing multiple crews.
Experience with substation construction, maintenance and switching.
KNOWLEDGE
Understands and adheres to the safety and security procedures stated in the Northeastern REMC Safety Manual and National Electric Safety Code regarding line construction, operation and maintenance. Determines appropriate action beyond guidelines. Reports potentially unsafe conditions. Safety work rules and good general work practices are followed on a daily basis.
Be knowledgeable of Northeastern REMC operations, policies, products, and services.
Maintain thorough knowledge of the functions of overhead and underground equipment.
SKILLS
Good organization skills that accurately scope the length and difficulty of tasks and/or projects. Able to set objectives and goals. Uses resources effectively and efficiently.
Be able to perform first aid, CPR, and bucket truck and pole top rescues. Keeping certifications and methods valid and up to date.
Obtain forklift certification when training is provided.
Network and personal computer software programs including Northeastern’s electronic mapping system.
Skills in using equipment such as a trencher/backhoe, fork lift, chain saws, generators, fans, pumps, measuring devices, wire puller, locators, secondary fault finder, small hand and powered tools.
Basic computer skills including the use of the department’s iPad for accessing information.
Effective communication skills that clearly and accurately provide information, resources, and services to the appropriate parties with patience and professionalism.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES (other reasonably related duties may be assigned)
Perform construction and maintenance activities such as digging trenches for lines, excavating, climbing and working from poles and ladders.
Supervise line crew as assigned to ensure all job-related time is accurately reported.
Inspect completed construction and ensure that work was performed in accordance with staking sheets, National Electric Code and established procedures created by the department.
Make connections on all transformers including single and poly-phase, overhead and underground.
Install, remove and relocate transformers, primary lines, secondaries and service drops for both overhead and underground.
Perform hot-line work on all lines and voltages following prescribed methods and procedures.
Patrol the distribution and transmission system—reporting and repairing unsafe or unsatisfactory conditions.
Install oil circuit reclosers, electronic reclosers, poles, capacitors, regulators, SCADA operated equipment, switch gear, vaults, manholes, conduits, security lights and other line equipment as needed.
Install, splice and terminate primary underground and secondary underground conduits of varying sizes.
Locate and repair primary and secondary underground faults.
Rescue co-workers when needed from hazardous situations using pole-top and bucket truck techniques.
Locate Northeastern REMC underground facilities when needed (after hours and on weekend in emergency situations).
Travel to and assist other electric utilities to restore service in emergency situations.
Assist the meter area.
Help install equipment for promotional programs.
Assist with snow removal and building maintenance.
Advise appropriate departments of any known need for their services, reporting any irregularities and/or abnormal conditions such as meter outages or down-lines.
Advise the appropriate areas of need for promotional or public relation services, including locations of new home construction and remodeling. Promote increased use of electricity and adequate wiring.

This position requires a high level of physical activity that includes constant standing, physical strain and lifting up to 100lbs. Visual acuity and precise overall motor skills needed.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Full-time employment that regularly works during business operating hours however must accept emergency 24-hour standby calls on off-duty hours according to weekly schedules per the “line service watch portion” of the Trades and Crafts Working Agreement. Primarily works outside. Job sites can include driving and/or walking on slippery, uneven and rough surfaces. Subject to extreme heat and cold, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions and oils.
