General Statement of Duties:
The Technical Director/Set Designer is primarily responsible for implementation of all production elements (lighting, sound, set design, construction, etc.) of all Theatre at the Mount productions. The Technical Director also teaches the Technical Theatre Practicum Course and provides support for all activities conducted in the facility. The Technical Director maintains theatre resources and equipment and ensures safe working practices. Key to this is a strong work ethic centered on excellent organizational skills and the ability to develop and maintain positive, collaborative relationships with all artistic parties (directors, actors, etc.) as well as college administrative staff and volunteers. This position is a full time in person position at the Gardner MWCC campus.
Responsibilities:
Designs scenery, builds sets, and oversees all technical aspects for 6 - 8 Theatre at the Mount productions. (year-round season);
Collaborates with Directors and other production staff members on all design elements;
Completes construction of all scenic design elements within the designated time period as determined by the overall production schedule;
Attends required production meetings;
Advises Director of Theatre on the technical specifications, costs and usage of technical equipment required for the individual show;
Manages and maintains scene shop and technical equipment including lighting, sound, and rigging equipment; arranges for the repair and replacement within budgetary constraints, performs preventive maintenance on equipment. Maintains inventory;
Ensures smooth operation of the technical aspects of all productions during performances;
Provides support for all activities/performances conducted in the theatre;
Assists with preparation of technical operation budgets. Purchases, leases/and or borrows theatre equipment and material as necessary in accordance with the college's fiscal procedures. Ensures that invoices and receipts for all authorized expenditures are submitted promptly;
Makes recommendations to the Director of Theatre regarding capital purchases of technical equipment;
Teaches Technical Theatre Practicum Course;
Develops, implements, and monitors policies to ensure a safe work environment in the backstage and stage areas;
Maintains current knowledge of all equipment and supervises training on all equipment;
Helps recruit, manage, train, and retain stagehand volunteers. Develops and maintains relationships with other local theatres, colleges, designers, and builders;
Stays abreast of new technology and software relative to lighting, audio, and video engineering;
All other additional duties related to the success of the Theatre Department as necessary.
Job Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:
Professional experience in set design and construction, lighting design, audio and video engineering, including new technology and software;
A valid Massachusetts's Driver's License or ability to acquire within 30 days of hire;
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs;
Ability to work occasional nights/weekends as needed.
