The Local News Department is at the heart of our operation at WBUR and is responsible for delivering a range of programs that include Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Radio Boston, weekend news, and newscasts.
Our Morning Edition program, airing from 5 to 9 a.m. on weekdays, is a cornerstone of WBUR's local news offerings. Morning Edition is one of the top-rated news programs in all of Boston radio, providing our listeners with essential news, in-depth features, and compelling interviews to start their day.
As the Executive Producer of Morning Edition you are the cornerstone of our early news operation, accountable for the overall sound and editorial content of WBUR's morning news programming and also for bringing the most urgent, timely, and local conversations to light through our powerful show team.
Primary duties include managing the execution of the show, including all material locally produced and broadcast by WBUR and stories from National Public Radio; you decide which feature stories, be they network or local, are the most important to our listeners and thus warrant inclusion in the broadcast; you will also edit and direct all local material broadcast during morning news programming including newscasts and continuity; and supervise the show's host and producers.
You will also assist with setting the WBUR's news agenda for the day. As an editorial leader at WBUR, you will play a crucial role balancing the needs of the Morning Edition team with the needs of the organization as a whole, and working to nurture an environment in which talented journalists can do their best work.
Your Responsibilities:
(30%) Oversee all elements of Morning Edition. Assign, edit, and build newscasts. Review all show copy, editing as needed, to ensure it meets WBUR standards for fairness, newsworthiness, and accuracy. Direct live host interviews and reporter debriefs, and supervise the editing of in-show, pre-taped interviews. Determine the insertion of local material into the NPR broadcast. Direct the live show.
(35%) Supervise Morning Edition staff; assign, coach and edit host, Morning Edition writers, producers, and field producer on short and long-format stories. Provide regular, constructive feedback on job performance, including annual performance. Recruit and hire for open positions. Serve as a critical manager in our news organization.
(15%) Aggressively pursue consequential news that breaks or develops overnight and during the broadcast, chasing newsmakers and coordinating with newsroom leaders to scramble reporters as needed.
(20%) Participate in daily editorial conversation and planning to help develop short and long term coverage. Lead regular team meetings to plan future coverage, fostering inclusive and supportive environments for the constructive development and refinement of show elements.

Education and Experience
Bachelors degree or equivalent/significant relevant experience
5+ years of relevant work experience

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Familiarity with broadcast operations.
