Here at the County of Sonoma, Engineering Technician positions offer opportunities to gain experience toward career growth in the field of sub-professional engineering. As you gain on-the-job training and experience, you can progress through our career ladders. While all our sub-professional and professional engineering positions require knowledge of algebra and geometry as well as the ability to accurately enter data, conduct reporting, and track and maintain project records, the County offers various starting points for you to begin exploring your career in civil engineering. As Engineering Technician I's gain experience, they may alternately be promoted to Engineering Technician II.
Currently, Permit Sonoma is recruiting for an Engineering Technician position at either the I, II, or III level. If you are interested in being considered at the different levels of this opportunity, you must apply to the separate concurrent recruitments being conducted for each level.
Working in the office and out in the field, Permit Sonoma's Engineering Technician positions perform work related to plan checks for grading, sanitation, and encroachment applications and the inspection of private construction improvements. They monitor non-standard septic systems and inspect drainage improvements, grading, cut-fills, sanitation and water connections, curb-gutter-sidewalks, and driveways for code and plan compliance. Along with conducting plan reviews and issuing correction notices, they also keep written and electronic notes regarding actions of inspections and site reviews. Successful candidates for the position will be intellectually curious, adaptable, and possess:
The ability to gather and confirm field data, and experience issuing permits and inspecting a project's compliance with plans and specifications
The skill to review maps and legal descriptions related to survey activities such as subdivision maps, records of survey, corner records, etc.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently and prioritize daily activities
Excellent customer service skills, and the ability to work tactfully and cooperatively with applicants, engineers, industry representatives, staff, and other agencies
Training and/or experience using drafting software such as AutoCAD, AutoCAD Civil 3D, etc.
Due to the nature of the inspection work that Engineering Technicians perform, incumbents are required to work indoors, in an office setting, and outdoors. They drive across the County in assigned County vehicles on dirt roads, pavements, and in various weather conditions. As these positions conduct site inspections in the unincorporated areas of Sonoma County, incumbents may be exposed to natural hazards such as poison oak, ticks, and other wildlife. Minimum Qualifications
Education: Academic course work in plane geometry, trigonometry, algebra, and surveying which would provide an opportunity to acquire the knowledge and abilities listed. Course work in an Engineering Technology curriculum leading to an Associate Degree is desirable.
Experience: Any combination of experience which would provide an opportunity to acquire the knowledge and abilities listed. Normally, one year of experience at the level of Engineering Aide with the County of Sonoma, would provide such opportunity.
