Position Summary
The Mechanic is responsible for performing skilled mechanical work in the maintenance, inspection, and repair of cooperative vehicles and equipment. This position ensures that all trucks, automobiles, construction equipment, generators, and related machinery are maintained in safe, reliable, and efficient operating condition to support the cooperative’s operations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Preventative Maintenance: Perform scheduled and routine maintenance on all cooperative vehicles and equipment, including oil changes, tune-ups, inspections of tires, transmissions, hydraulics, and other mechanical systems to ensure safe and reliable operation.
- Diagnostics and Repairs: Diagnose mechanical issues and complete necessary repairs on trucks, automobiles, heavy equipment, generators, and related systems. Follow technical manuals and manufacturer specifications when servicing unfamiliar equipment.
- Field and Emergency Repairs: Perform repairs outside of the shop, including roadside or field service calls, and respond to after-hours repair needs as required to support operational continuity.
- Parts and Inventory Management: Maintain and organize the parts stockroom and equipment bins in a neat, orderly, and safe condition. Monitor inventory levels, including oil dispensing units and other materials, and coordinate with Accounting to ensure accurate inventory records.
- Procurement Support: Initiate requisitions for parts and service needs with approved suppliers, with authorization from the Purchasing Manager.
- Equipment Records and Documentation: Complete and maintain accurate service records, maintenance reports, inspection documentation, and repair paperwork. Ensure maintenance reports for all vehicles and equipment are current and properly filed.
- Shop and Garage Maintenance: Maintain the garage facility in a clean, safe, and orderly condition. Follow all safety procedures and ensure compliance with applicable regulations.
- Asset Support: Deliver and pick up vehicles and equipment requiring outside repair services as needed.
- Time and Cost Tracking: Accurately track and allocate labor time to the appropriate work orders and accounts.
- Other Duties: Attend the Annual Meeting of Membership and all other work-related meetings, training sessions, and cooperative functions as required. Perform other reasonably related duties as assigned. Perform repairs outside of the shop, including roadside or field service calls, and respond to after-hours repair needs as required to support operational continuity.
Qualifications
Education: High school diploma or GED required; additional post-secondary education preferred.
Experience: Minimum of five (5) years of mechanic experience, preferably working with heavy-duty trucks, utility equipment, or similar machinery; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Licenses: Valid Indiana Class A CDL.
